Model 10-5

Just got back from a gun show. Picked up a really nice old 10-5 Smith in nickel with the 2-inch barrel, all original. Now the question. It came with faux pearl handles, but nice with a lot of old stampings on the back which are really hard to make out. It does identify the grips as for a .38 M&P, rounded butt, and some more stuff I just can't make out. Did S&W offer this kind of optional grips when the gun was new, or do think it was an add-on?

Do they look like these? If so they are Jay Scott brand grips.

my guess is they were made by Jay Scott, an aftermarket grip company from the North East that was very popular in the 50's thru 70's (I believe), doing alot of the same stuff Ajax grips does now (man made grips to immulate natural materials - Scott did mostly pearl & stag from what I've seen)...thier grips were well made for what they were...one forum member commented that Colt owned them at one juncture, but I do know they made a lot of S&W grips...

hope this helps...if any forum member has more info, I'd like to hear more myself...I'm a novice to Jay Scott grips...

Thanks, MP1983. Rats! I was hoping for something different, but I figured as much, and yes, mine look exactly like those. They sure put a lot of specs. on the back. I collect older guns mostly, and in the early 1900's Colt made a score of different optional grips for most all of their automatics, Mother of Pearl, among them.

Back in their day the Jay Scott grips were an "upgrade" from
the everyday service stocks.

While some see them as a bit gaudy by todays standards I
think they fit in with the era of the older Smiths.

Been thinking of getting a pair myself.
