a follow- up, I just picked up a 10-7, .38, 4 inch, AEP33xx. Any ideas would be helpful. Seller also had a 'matching' holster. bought both.

Is the "gun show lore" that the 10-7 was only made in 1977 true?

Sellers play this up and ask all kinds of crazy prices for 10-7's because of this "only made for 1 year" thing.

If that's the case, the 64-7 was only made for 2 years, from 2002-2004, but no one cares about those:)

I don't get it, on page 174 of the SCSW 3rd edition, it states that the 10-5 was made in 1962. It shows right under that, that the 10-6 was also made in 1962. Wouldn't the -6 supersede the -5? Would the -5 be produced after the -6 was introduced?

They were produced concurrently. The 10-5 being the tapered barrel and the 10-6 was the heavy barrel.:)

The 10-5 and 10-6 models were built at the same time. The 10-5 is the standard or "pencil" barrel while the 10-6 is the heavy barrel. When they changed the models in 1977, the standard barrel became the 10-7 and the heavy barrel became the 10-8. The 10-7s and 10-8s were made until 1988 when the next major change occurred.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Pistola. I see how the 10-6 says "Trigger guard screw eliminated on heavy barrel model", but didn't know the -6 was heavy barrel only.

So much to learn about the Model 10's alone, how do you guys remember the little things about every model?

Oustanding book. every S&W owner should have a copy (and no I don't have any royalties coming)
