I have a Model 10-6, the heavy barrel...its great but there is a big nick out of the front sight and the crown has seen better days...I got it used and it looks like it was a back up in a patrol car center consol...banged around but not shot...I was thinking it might be cool to have the barrel cut back to 3 inches and a new low profile blade added to complement the fixed sight arrangement...Not a snub mind you, but a compact version of its former self? Maybe even a conversion to a round butt...

Thoughts...This is just a thought I have had and I would like some input from you...I have to do something with the crown and front sight blade anyway...what say you

If the crown is messed up then getting the barrel cut to the length you want it isn't a bad idea and you would have to have the sight redone anyway. I guess it just depends on how much you like that gun and what want to spend.

Nope...its a .38 Special...there are lots of them around, this is the series that has the small raised rib portion so that they looked more like the 15 and 19 barrel wise...I think it would look and carry well as a 3 inch.

Sounds like an ideal candidate for the modification. I could easily see myself doing it. A 3" K-frame is a very nice thing...

Why not send it back to S&W and have them install a 3" heavy barrel? That way the lettering will be in the correct position plus it may be less expensive.

I'm in favor of chopping it, I did! My 10-8 mods

Of course, cost is always a factor and like others said, finding a 3" barrel may be the cheaper way to go.
In fact, I might just have a used but good-condition 3" .38Spl heavy barrel that you could use, I'll take a look tonight.

Well, I said I was going to look for that barrel tonight, but my curiosity got the best of me, so I looked and I found what I was thinking about.
This barrel is S&W, but looks like it could've been a six inch at one point, as the factory stampings on the side are not there and someone has stamped .38 SPEC on it.

Forgot to take a shot of the forcing cone, but it's in good shape, too. No cracks or roughness.

The round sight blade looks like it's staked in place, so that could always be replaced with a ramp.
Total length is 3.125"

This has been sitting in my parts box for a decade, so it probably wouldn't take much $$$ to talk me out of it.
:)

Oops, looks like I resurrected a zombie thread, sorry about that.
Well, if anyone needs a 3" HB, let me know.

Kframe.....I have one of those barrels also. I'm wondering if they are aftermarket made. Or maybe someone converted a bunch of barrels.
One day I plan on putting it on a cheap model 10, if I come across a deal.
