My Dad died a few years ago and I grabbed all his guns. He had a Model 10-8 which he bought used. It was an old Police gun that they sold off when they moved to 9mm. It has some holster wear however it looks like it was not shot a lot. I never paid much attention to it when he got it and I never shot it. He kept it in the night stand beside the bed for years. I threw it in my safe after he passed away and there it has sat for almost 3 years.

I have been taking my girls, 9 and 11, to the range and they have been shooting 22s. A Ruger SR22 and Ruger Mark II. The oldest Haley wanted to shoot a "big gun". I dug the Model 10-8 out of the safe along with some wad cutter target loads and it was off to the range.

I was really surprised how nice the 10-8 shot. The action and trigger were nice and the accuracy was good. The girls loved shooting it and with target loads they had no problems with recoil and control. At 10 yards they were keeping all the shots on the paper and most in the black.

I was actually considering selling it but now I have changed my mind. Never been a big wheel gun person but the 10-8 is a nice gun. It also looks nice sitting next to my model 28-3.

I think you have made a good decision on keeping it. As you said , your Dad chose it to be his bedside gun for years. I imagine he did so for a good reason. My guess would be simplicity and reliability.

Sounds to me like a win-win. You have a gun that ties closely to your late father (after all, he trusted it as his nightstand gun... you don't get much closer than that) and it shoots well. When you add to this that it looks as though your daughters will carry on with the tradition, you have the makings of a triple win. I bet your father is smiling down from Heaven right now. :)

I full well understand how your daughter can shoot the 10-8 so well. It is a very good shooting revolver. Mine has an action extremely close to my K-38. I picked my 10-8 up at my lgs for $250 because it looks like a junk yard dog that needs a friend. And it has not let me down. Apparently this came back to the states from Australia where it was worn hard but never shot much. Bright bore and tight as a drum. It is now a keeper.

The model ten was the "bread & butter" revolver for S&W for a very long time. There was a good reason for that, they are great revolvers! Thanks for sharing your story and keep that one in the family!

There are millions of Model 10s and 64s out there for a reason. They were reliable and accurate service guns with great balance -- offered at a reasonable price point. What's not to like?

priced where

i have one too. what price did you list it, if you were to sell it? MINes in excellent condition with small number of rounds fired, acquired in 1970's
