Model 10 date?

I'm asking for Forum's help identifying the approximate age of my recently purchased Model 10. The serial number is C 3483XX. The model number is not on the crane. Instead the crane is marked:

My book shows '71-'72.

Look for the model number on the frame cylinder/crane opening, not on the crane itself.

That's odd. Are you sure it's a D prefix? The model numbers started in the middle of the C prefix in 1957/58, and theoretically there should not be any D prefix guns without a model number. The diamond stocks don't go with that serial either.

Aha. Then it all fits. You've got a pretty nicely preserved Pre-Model 10 M&P from about 1955/56. Model number stamping started on this model in mid-1958 around C43x,xxx somewhere.

Thanks to all for their info. Can anyone who knows more about vintage S&W's than I do (which is just about everyone) give me an idea of the fair market value on this piece? Yeah, we all want to think we made a smoking good deal!
