In the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson"' 4th edition, at the top of page 204 there is a statement "Frames are slightly different between heavy barrel and tapered barreled variations." Does this mean that the Model 10 with a heavy barrel uses a different grip then one with a tapered barrel. I have a Model 10-8, 5D serial number, that I cannot find grips to fit. Any help with this would be appreciated.

As Truckman mentioned, it appears your gripframe took a hit about halfway down the backstrap. There are only two types of K griipframes; square and round butt.
Edit to add:
Early Model 12's have a narrower frame and take special grips, but that's not the issue here.

The standard barrel frames have a different contour at the front of the topstrap to match-up with the round barrel. The heavy barrel frames have less drop because of the rib. Photos swiped off the net...

Flatside, take the grips off & post some pics. If you have a small straight edge, use it in the pics to show how true (or not) the frame grip area is.

Something definitely looks out of whack in your pics. You may need to order some whack...................... :D

I can’t tell for sure if your grip frame took a hit, but those grips look like they are for an N frame based on how the wood is sticking out at the top of the back strap. I cannot imagine what would generate enough force to bend the steel grip frame.

This is the answer. Look at how much wood is poking up at the top. There's realistically nothing that could take off that much steel. Occam's Razor wins again.
