So, saw a nice Un-priced Model 10 No Dash while I was picking up a recent transfer. (Owner hadn't done his own research yet.). I was wondering if a No Dash was any rarer than other older Model 10s to suggest a premium over older ones. Looked pretty good through the glass, but haven't handled it… yet.

It's a little bit hard to tell quite what you are asking. There are no Model 10s older than a Model 10 with no dash number. Perhaps you are asking if a Model 10 is more or less valuable than a .38 M&P made prior to 1958. If that is the question, the answer is "it depends." Not very helpful, I know, but there are just too many variables.

As I understand it, some dash variations were made in fewer numbers than others, and that rarity will drive prices usually. However as a general rule, with two guns of similar condition, the older one will typically be priced higher. Then again when we are talking about the most common model made, it might not matter that much.

I'm not asking the question very well, as I do not have a lot of info. Let me see what his asking price is and I can be more blunt. :)

I really only have a desire for an older nickel model 10-5, as my father had one. I just thought this one looked good for it age.

A no dash has much less production quantity by far than m&p because of the limited production years but the 5 screw has a collector value. So, by shear availability the no dash is rarer if that's what you mean by older.

In my book I'd buy a no dash over the other (I already did😎)

There are guys who love the no dash because they are the 4 screw frame. 4 screw frame was only made for 5 years or so. I have a 4 screw 56 M&P shooter grade a few pits and bluing wear, it cleaned up nicely. Mechanically very very good. I paid $399 for it 6 months ago. It was listed as a 10-5.
