Not super old, and very common. C 177994 likely shipped in early 1952 to possibly mid-1952. Collectors call it a pre-Model 10 M&P. It is NOT a Model 10 - those did not exist until 1958.

Well it is sixty-some years old ... I don't know the technical definition of "super old" but I don't doubt some folks would consider it pretty old.

Keep in mind the frame of reference of younger folks. A ten year old computer is ancient.

I have a 5" that is later serial # than the OP is talking about - mine was DOB of 1952 which is fine as I was born in 1952. I too object to the "old" . . well not really but I like those years . . . and mine is a great shooter.

Question for OP

Are you looking to buy this pre-model 10? Or just looking to find a date? If you don't mind, a lot of members here would like to know condition and price for comparison values. Thanks in advance if you care to share.

I said that as I have several M&Ps listed close to that SN which DID ship in the early to mid-1952 period. It wasn't a wild guess. Not to say it couldn't have shipped earlier or later than that. Everyone should know that story.

Heck, a 10-year-old computer IS ancient. A 62-year-old S&W is just in its prime, and still functions exactly as it was designed to do.

Old are good.

In terms of firearms I'd consider 100 years or more "super old." In terms of people I'd call that age "distinguished."

I have a MP 96 years young, only 32 years older than me. Shoot it weekly. Fine, accurate firearm. I guess we are distinguished.

Heck, I have 5 guns manufactured close to or before my Grandfather was born in 1886. They date to 1866, 1884, 1886 and 1888, and I don't consider any of them as "Super Old". The 5th is a S&W "Frontier Model" that dates to 1885-1890 or so. I shoot all of them from time to time.

My dad got it right! An old person is anybody that is 15yrs. older than you!
Turned 70 in August (not too sure how that happened!), but thinking back-as a teenager anybody in their 30's were way too old to pay attention to!
