I have a Model 10-10 that has light primer strikes when firing double action and fails to fire. Information from this forum has led me to the strain screw. What is the length of the screw from the factory? I have included pictures.

*IF* I need a new screw, are they the same from Hand Ejectors to Models 10s? I have found some available but the descriptions are very vague. (the pics of these screws also show a rounded tip on the screw)

Round butt and square butt strain screws are different, but from K-L-N frames each is identical. There is no "Factory Length" per se, just the design length. The strain screw length is adjusted when the revolver is "put up" to result in a specified amount of pressure to start the hammer from the rest position. As a result factory original strain screws can vary in length a bit. They are fit by filing the end of the screw.

I had the same problem with my 10-11. The previous owner filed the pointed tip off the strain screw. It looked just like your pics. I bought a new strain screw from Midway and have had no problems since.

Someone told me to put a used primer over the strain screw's tip. It will put a little more pressure on the mainspring. I haven't tried it, but it sounds like a good idea.

The used primer idea is a good one. I once needed to lengthen a too short strain screw. I cut a tiny plastic square out of an old credit card and positioned it between the end of the screw and the mainspring. It worked great!

A new strain screw is probably a good idea. I used to get occasional light primer hits with certain primers. I cut a small brass rectangle from a empty case & put it between the strain screw & spring. It solved the problem without increasing the trigger pull much.

If you call the factory customer service, they will send you a new one for free.

Thanks for the information.
I think that this screw has been tampered with and I should start with a new one. A call to S&W is in order. I dont really care about the trigger pull, I just want it to work.

Thanks yall.
Jim
