Model 10 Work

Did you use a checkering file? Sent a 3 1/2" 25-2 to be reblued, should be done soon. Wanted to round butt the gun and do something with the back strap but chickened out. It would look sweet the way you did it. Larry
Roger. It was quite tricky at times but worth it. A square butt would checker pretty fast. Famous last words. Lol

Do you do the insert on J's? ;)
Lol! I sure can if you'd like. Shoot me an email at [email protected] if you'd like to set something up! Shop name is HS Custom, LLC in Joplin, MO. I have a FB and IG thing. Haven't taken the time to build a website. The social media stuff is exhausting....

As the customer in this evolution of a carry gun.............

.......let me throw in some comments. This forum is a dangerous place, it puts ideas in your mind and that is bad when your dealing with an old, feeble mind like mine.

As with most of us we spend a long time looking for the perfect carry handgun. In spite of the countless arguments pro or con about platforms, brands, calibers ect.,with some pretty impressive folks behind some of these stances on this gun or that one it still boils down to what works for you the individual.

I have learned after starting my LE career in1976 that I am best suited for revolvers, Smith & Wesson revolvers to be specific. I have also learned I am very comfortable with the .38 / .357 magnum calibers. Have also learned that the 3 inch K frame is pretty near perfection for my use.

I have also found grips, holsters and other accessories that work for me and enhance the performance and use.

I have also found that good , very good Gunsmiths/Craftsmen can greatly enhance your hand held firearms. Had very good luck with Cylinder & Slide, Nighthawk, and a couple of others.

Wanted to own a revolver with a checkered backstrap since seeing examples with that modification many years ago and that desire was reseurected by Two bit Cowboy (Bob) and other folks examples shown on the forum.

As I was looking for some one to perform this work I wondered if there was someone close to this part of the country that would be good to do this work.

I called Bob Reeves and asked him if Nighthawk would do this and he told me no but provided the name of a new young custom gunsmith in SW Mo. Dustin Housel, HS Custom. That name sounded familiar and then I remembered a recent article by Roy Huntington in "American Handgunner" about this young man and how impressed he was with him and his work.

There you go 2 gentleman whose opinions about firearms that I listen to and I trust had both reccomended Dustin. Made the call and could not have been more pleased than I was when I met him. As Roy said in his article Dustin has a passion for firearms combined with incredible talent and best of all for me a strong interest in revolvers and innovations and custom work on them that has gone on for years.

He is on board the train bound for carry gun perfection and every file stroke he performs strives for that goal.

I can not recommend this young man strongly enough !

Thank you Dustin . I plan on other projects headed your way in the future.

Tony

Thank you SO much for the kind words! I really mean it. I'm so glad you posted as I wasn't sure what your username was on here! I can tell you that your revolver inspired about three more in the safe and a few more in the works. ;)
I'm in LOVE with the 1911 and Smith&Wesson revolver platforms and I'm SO glad that when I open the safe in the shop those are just what is in there.
Excited to see ya this week!

I can't believe you did that backstrap with a hand file. Then again, how else could you do it unless you had a factory machine tool.

You are indeed a wizard.
Right! Lol. I've got machines, dividing heads, rotary tables and such and still couldn't wrap my brain around a set up. All manual obviously. CNC could do it but ya know. That stuff is expensive. Maybe if I had a bucket of them to do I could sweet talk a shop in making a fixture and writing code for it.
I do enjoy hand checkering for some odd reason. It's very "personal" for sure. Lol

Good evening and merry Christmas! Just wanted to throw up a little work I did for a great customer. This is a 10-8 3" round butt and when he dropped it off I immediately fell in love. I've got a model 10 4" heavy square now that's going to see a round butt conversion, bobbed hammer, shortening the barrel to 3.5 and a dovetail front sight. I've got some other cool stuff planned but that's for another thread. Anyways back to this beauty. Work performed included 30lpi added to the back strap, removed trigger serrations, slick on the action, front sight insert and chamfered charge holes.

Extremely nice, and I'll take two!!!

Best Regards,

I always used to chamfer them with the ejector in place. Your checkering is impressive. How long did it take to do the backstrap?
Yeah I went back on forth but finally chamfered with ejector removed. I did however slightly break that edge on the extractor.

Thanks for the compliment on the checkering. As far as time I bet I had around 3.5hrs. I actually thought it wouldt take as long as I'm using doing 1911's but I was mistaken. Lol. It was quite an experience.
