Would anyone happen to know if the model 1006 law enforcement trade in guns marked BPD are from the Birmingham, AL PD?

I've had a pair of them for many years, but was never sure what agency they came from.

I do remember that the guns came to me from GSI (the Steyr AUG importer) who were headquartered in Birmingham and I had always assumed they were Birmingham PD weapons.

That's probably what I will do. I have been wanting to send them back to S&W for bead blast refinishing anyway.

The guns came as a package deal with 2 cases of Federal 10mm that I have never seen before or since. It was a LE type white box loading of 155 grain JHP.

I seem to attract odd ball 10mm stuff. Once I was at a FBI meeting at Quantico and afterwards we drifted down to the range to kill some time until the traffic on 95 cleared. We used my car to drive down to the range and spent some quality time with the 10mm MP5's. When I got home that night, I found a couple boxes of Federal XM001 180gr FMJ that got left in the back. Another 10mm load that I had never seen before.

Sorry -got off topic.

With reference to the 1006 refinishing, is there anyone else other than S&W to consider. I've been dithering about with this idea for about a year and should really get it done.

I would imagine as an investment item that it would be best to leave them as original. Honest wear is appreciated and expected on PD firearms. I have all my custom work done by Springfield Custom. They do quality work. I would highly recommend them if you decide to have your handgun refinished. I enjoy your story. I am a huge 10mm fan.

Thanks for the referral - I'll check it out. I have considered the guns as shooters for my wife and I, but your point about investment value is quite valid.

I still have my 1076 and I picked up a brand new 1006 with adjustable sites as a spare gun back in the late 90's. Not sure why - just seemed like the thing to do.

Call S&W cust. service.
They can usually tell you the ship date AND where they were first shipped.

I pinged a friend who was a firearms instructor at the Birmingham, AL BPD academy in the 80's and 90's. He said to his knowledge there were never any 10MM guns issued by the department. Only 9mm and later .40

He said that someone might have received permission at some point (depending on who the chief was) to carry a privately owned 10mm but it was certainly never the issued gun.
