model 12 question

Some time back, I read of an article where a fellow studied the reloading manuals of earlier eras. Much hotter fodder than today. So, I am confident that TODAY'S +P was pretty much standard fare of the time. YMMV

I have a Model 12 4", steel cylinder as I recall (it hasn't been touched in awhile so, seriously, I don't recall!) and I only shoot Hornady's light loads through it. But I think they're cool and if you're collecting S&W .38s, well, they fit perfectly!

i only ask because this will be my only handgun. i'm handicapped and don't handle recoil like i used to. the 12 will be used and not gonna live in a safe. i would likely shoot very few +p's.

Don't be afraid to shoot your 12....they are quite serviceable & not fragile ...I have a SQ BT 2" mod 12 that I bought in the 70's that I have fired several thousand rds of std velocity 38 loads thru with a batch of +P equalivant loads every so often because they are what I carried in it and my other snub's.....Over the decades I have used this revolver as a trainer for novice shooters that I was instructing how to shoot handguns......it has served in that role well and I still shoot it when I feel the urge.

Yes, buy and use with confidence. Buffalo Bore makes a nice lead 158HP at standard velocity of about 830fps. All K-frame grips will 'fit, with the caveat that you'll have a visible gap between the frame and horns at the top on the -1,-2, or -3. So, if you need goodyears to help with handling the recoil, you're still going to be ok.

I bought a new nickle square butt 2inch back in the mid 80's. It's a great gun.

I know where an 85% 4 inch sq butt 12 is.
I think OTD at $375 the wear is just from a holster.

A 10-8 in this area is about $350 in 98%
I am thinking about it.

Model 12 revolver

Back in the 1980's I had two of them with 2 inch bbl s. The first was a used blued model and the second was a nkl that I bought new. I had a desk job in those days and I didn't need a larger gun. With semi auto's coming into use, I sold both, they were nice guns. I am sure that you are aware that the dementions are a little smaller than a std K frame gun. Its thinner. They fit in a K frame holster, but are a little loose. The k frame grips will not fit though. I had to qualify with them twice a year with no problems.

Count me among those who would like to see S&W make a new Model 12.
Carry mine frequently loaded with Speer Gold Dot non +Ps.
