I see a lot of threads on cracked Model 12s and have heard about them for years. Never had one to the best of my recollection, but kinda have the "hots" for one now, especially a nickeled one.

Exactly WHERE do you look at the Model 12 to determine if the frame is cracked?

Is it near the forcing cone or in the front of the frame or...?

So that's the only place I need to worry about, right?

Even with my old eyes, I think I can see that!

Now to find one.

I have never seen any airweight frame crack anywhere else.
Old model 12 blueing is sometimes almost black. Make sure you have good lighting. Sometimes the frame crack is hairline and is tough to see. Have a pocket bore light or mini flashlight to help with lighting.

I like 12's but I'm also cautious as I've seen MANY cracked ones over the years.

Don't forget the grips! No, the frame is not prone to cracking there, but the model 12 grips are unique to that model...replacement K Frame grips won't fit. They are close, but not quite right. On a side note, I have been looking for a snubby 12 with a round butt for some time, and I think I may have to broaden my range...they are getting expensive.

Neat packin K frames...

I picked this one up...new old stock...for $400 about 2 years ago. Thought that was a little high then, but I'm good with the decision now.

Norton 750 is right, if you find one, make sure the grips are good. Only the dash 4's frame is the same width as the K frames. The earlier versions had a thinner frame and you'll look a long time for replacement grips.
