Model 14-1

Hi all.

This is the Model 14-1 I'm getting off a friend. The grips aren't original but they fit my hands well. The trigger is beautiful, especially in single action.

14-1’s are fairly scarce. If you are thinking of getting it refinished, I can recommend Ford’s in Crystal River, FL. They did my 14-1 and it turned out exquisite.

Mine, serial #K431xxx, shipped June, 1961. It was previously owned by a retired Major of the Kansas Highway Patrol, serving on the KHP Pistol Team for several years.

That's a nice 14-1. The Pachmayr grips are wonderful for shooting.

In case you didn'y know the K38 or model 14 was S&W's flagship target revolver. I'd have to dig it out of the safe but seem to remember mine is a 14-3. One of these days would like to replace the cylinder as there are a few pits that really shouldn't be there. Does shoot very well. Out side of my K framed revolvers I prefer my model 15 with adjustable sights. And the model 14 is no slouch in the accuracy department. Frank

My 8 3/8” Mod 14 started out sort of disappointing with the accuracy. Jim Kelly at Darlington Gun Works found a problem with the forcing cone. He remachined it and refitted the barrel. Now it is probably the most accurate revolver I’ve ever fired. Caused me to buy a sister in 6”. Grab you some wad cutters and head to the range!

Just remember, while some 14s saw duty as police revolvers, they were preeminent target revolvers and thrive on 148gr wadcutters!

l was at GUNS n THINGS a few years ago when a guy walked in with a

Model 14 wanting to sell it.. David would not meet the man's price and he

began to walk out. l turned and asked David if he would mind if l spoke

to the man. David said, ''Go ahead as long as its 0utside''. l SPRINTED

out the door and caught the guy as he was getting in his car... Told me

what he wanted. l said, ''SOLD''. We went to my bank and l gave him his

CASH... Also a copy of his drivers license for bill of sale.... Said he had bought

it at an estate sale auction that very day in a nearby town.. Don't know

what the gentleman paid but he was very happy with Three Hundred cash.

l was happy TOO.. Happier MORE after examining the gun closer. lts a

Model 14-1, 4 screw, Diamond Target Grips..

3 screw I think. I can only see one visible so I'm making the assumption that there are 2 obscured by the grips.

It would be a 4 screw gun. 3 in the side plate and one in front of the trigger guard. The trigger guard screw was eliminated with the 14-2.

Welcome!! Remember to pull those grips from time to time to wipe down the frame. They can trap moisture and aid in corrosion

In the land of Oz, is it possible that your gun was at some time military property? AFAIK, the US Military issued the 4” Model 15 for duty carry to various branches, but there were some target pistols of various descriptions purchased by the military for recreational and competitive shooting. At one time, the K-38 was the choice for the centerfire leg of the 2700 course.

Since it has traveled as far and long as it has, it would be hard to guess when and why markings got added, but fun to speculate nonetheless. More importantly though, I hope you will get to shoot and enjoy it often.
