Model 14 (4 screw) With Non-Relieved Targets

I picked up a 14 no dash this weekend with stocks I've not seen. I've seen N targets, non-relieved, but not these. According to the SCSW, 4th they do exist. I just don't remember seeing any. Unfortunately these have been butchered with finger grooves and a thumb rest cut. I own a couple N cokes that have been modified for the K frame but I really think these are K frame stocks all the way. The last picture shows the stocks from my 4 screw K-38 (pre-14) for comparison.

Nice find! Unusual features and doesn't look refinished. Experimental? Any markings inside?

I had a 5-screw K-38 with unrelieved targets, they exist. Looks like the previous owner "relieved" these and a pretty neat job of it too.

I lucked into a circa 1953 K-22 with non relived target stocks and the matching magna stocks a few years back. I can't recall seeing many non relived magnas.

I have a K22 Masterpiece from 1951 that shipped with unrelieved target grips. The letter confirmed it.
Its a shame that a previous owner modified them, but I agree with you that they started life as unrelieved K targets.

I bought a set in the classifieds not long ago, and I have seen some on ebay. Notice the different corners of the checkered panels compared to the releived target stocks in the second pic. The color is a bit off, but they are the same grips in both first pic, and on the left in the second pic.

The major problem with the modification was they cut too deep for the finger grooves, unfortunately.

There are two types of non-relieved K-frame target stocks that came before the extractor relief (maybe three, not sure). I posted the pics below in a different thread recently.

First set has an extended lip that fills the space behind the trigger guard more completely (and probably breaks easily). The checkering panel extends further toward the back of the grip. This set is also a bit shorter at the bottom. It sold on ebay recently, for $178.

Second set has a bevel at the lip, the checkering panel is the usual size, and the length is the same as the later sets with extractor relief.

Both kinds were also posted in pics by RKMesa and 22hipower, hopefully one of them will comment here and post their pics.

Thought I would post a couple snap shots of the gun. The only real flaw is the freckling on the side plate. I think it's strange it's only on the side plate and no where else. The action is like a new one. I had to install a set of period correct magnas.

I've got a whole bunch of Black Hills 148 gr, WCs for it. I think it will be a paper puncher extraordinaire.

Posted these not too long ago on the thread you mention. There are at least two very different checkering patterns on the non-relieved K frames, maybe three. The ones with the larger checkered area are sometimes thought to be K frame "cokes" but are not. I've got six or seven sets and all seem to be just a little bit different.

Here's a pair of Targets I've had for years. They came on this 1958 M14 I purchased from a pawn shop in downtown Seattle a couple decades ago.
These are my favorite pair of S&W target grips, in showing it to a few NW collectors back then the consensus was that they were factory original, but I've never seen another set like them over the years.

Anybody have a similar set with this speed loader cut??

The Model 14 is close to my favorite range/paper target gun. I wish I could find a set of period correct Magnas for my 14-2. I think the period correct target stocks for your gun would have had an extractor relief (?).

I like target guns in general. I have been shooting Winchester "Super X" aka 148 gr Super Match HBWC. I bought two 500 rd cases just before Covid with the intention of splitting them with someone who was not able to do it at the time. Seemed overpriced for old ammo at the time, and I was a bit irked at being "stuck" with it, LOL.

All the 4-screw guns seem to have a great fit and finish. Worn or not, they seem to look better than what came before or after. Even the basic Model 10 4-screw had a great finish.

I had a 4 screw M14 no dash 8 3/8" barrel that came with non-relieved targets. Let a good friend talk me out of the gun, but not the grips. They go well on my M17 no dash.
