So I go to my LGS yesterday on my weekly trip, usually just to shoot the breeze. In the S & W case I see what I thought was a 586, upon inspection I see it is a 14-6. Needless to say I had to bring it home, no box or docs just the revolver. Nice diamond targets, will be looking for the correct combats. Did throw in a couple of non correct boxes. One was a model 17 from about 1989, marked $399.99, love to see that come back. OTD $650, good deal or not? This all started because of a Heavy Duty.

You did good mainly because of the diamond targets. I tend to see the M14's out for around $600. . .maybe a bit more. The diamond targets add a good amount of value. When you see them on EBAY, they run around $200, but you just don't see that many.

Well, let's see - a Heavy Duty, a model 17, and a 14-6...I'd say your gun budget just went into the red :). Nice find!

I'd guess you could do an even trade for the diamond Target stocks and the proper Combats, but the minute you do that the gun that needs the Targets your just swapped will fall into your lap...

I'd call it a win-win.

Win #1 - The 14-6 with the full-lug barrel doesn't seem to come up for sale too often and when it does it seems to command a bigger price than the non-full-lug models. The 14-5 wore finger groove combat stocks. This one looks to be in excellent shape and the price seems fair. Here's a link to a recent closed auction on Gun Broker where one sold for over $800.

Win #2 - The diamond targets stocks in excellent condition. Wow.

Sure enough. Bigtubby, thanks for the correction. Yes, a quick look at the SCSW shows the 14-6 with synthetic stocks. I edited my post to correct my error thinking the 14-6 came with finger groove combat stocks.

My 14-6 came with rubber S&W grips from the factory, I know the 14-5's had the combats not sure when they switched to factory rubber.

My thoughts were the same, I think I can find the proper combats, plus I can always use another set of diamond targets! The double action on this gun is really slick, range report will follow, later this week. So if anyone here has a set of proper combats PM me. Thanks Alan

My LGS said it had rubbers on it, he got the targets from the same guy he bought it from, thought it would sell better with them on it. Going back to see if he still has them. Best I can tell this gun was made in 1995, but I get confused with the newer serial #s.

As Bigtubby has pointed out, rubber may be original, but combats would look better, imho. Nothing against rubber, I have them on a 686 that I carry and prefer them to anything else.

Thanks

Nice catch at a reasonable price. The full lug guns seem to be very accurate, you will enjoy the gun. The model 14-5 & -6 are tougher to snag and cost more then what you paid. We will need a range report, Larry
