Here are some before and after pics . The gun was very rusted and pitted very deep , so deep in fact at the mussel end I had to mill off a bit and re- crown .

This was the only pic I had of it came to me . Sorry for this poor photo but you get the idea...……...

After a bunch of work and a few months later …………...

Thanks for looking .

That is amazing work. I dream of one day being able to restore a revolver like that. I haven't found one I wanted to attempt yet though

Did you blue that yourself? Or was it sent out for the blueing? Looks great!!!

Great work!

Curiosity ... Did you do it all yourself, and if so - How many hours do you have invested? If not - What did the restoration cost you?

That is great work! Beautiful job! Please take us through your whole process. You have some skills..l

Purists who turn up their collective noses at the mere mention of restoration of an old firearm should look at your threads and the pictures therein. ;) If that doesn't convince them, they just can't be reasoned with! Great job! :D

I have tried to stay out the fray with regard to restore or not . In fact I believe that is probably the most important step - deciding if the gun should be left as is or restored .

To me the actual piece dictates the decision . A number of guns that I have done were already reblued and a poor job to boot. So those are a no brainer , and some were pretty rough condition and have very little collector value .

Now that is where the issue comes up , just what is collector value? That is purely subjective in nature. And things have changed through the years , an M1 carbine for example was available for $30 bucks through the CMP in the 60s and that was mailed to your door. Now in 2019 look at the value of any carbine .

Also the change in the value of a dollar comes into play . So it is up to the individual what to do, some would not change anything no matter the condition and I respect that . Others would like a gun to look better and understand it will never be new again , just upgraded .

I have always tried to preserve and keep the original profile and edges in tact and that takes time . And I have learned that some things you are never going to erase no matter how deep you go. That is where a man is just chasing what can't be had.

Bottom line for me is this : model 10 police trade - yeah go for it. Pre war Lugers they don't go into the blast cabinet.

Really nice work. The gun needed restoring for sure. The re-crowned barrel looks super.

Gentlemen , I have been rust bluing and doing parking on handguns for a few years now .

It takes some time but exactly how many hours it is hard to say .

Thank you for the kind words .

I have rust blued some shotguns but never a handgun. What supplies does it take to get the finish of a handgun in the white? I just can't find that magical tool, wheel etc to use on all of those angles.....can you point me in the right direction?

Evaporust will remove the bluing . Then sandpaper files stones what have you and time . Blast cabinet for final metal prep but only to clean the steel to a pure reactive state. Not removing anything with the media, only cleaning . You can blast off the finish with your media but it dirties up the media quick and I like to keep it as clean as possible . I use 180 alum. oxide white. 60-100 psi.

This is what I run :
USA SKAT CAT 34 Abrasive Blast Cabinet - TP Tools & Equipment
