Model 17 extraction issues

I know 22s can be a pain to get out of the cylinder after they get dirty, but I had to bang the extractor with a box of ammo to get the first 6 out......I'm wondering if it could be the ammo..I was using uncoated remington game loads. Also, it was extremely hot today....would the heat affect the situation n any way....I never had this much trouble so early on. Last time I used Aguila .22s. Is ther a preferred round for revolvers?

I'm no ammo expert, but I had the same extraction troubles until I started using slower ammo. Target rounds work best in my guns. High velocity casings will swell just enough within the charge hole to grip the walls. There may be other causes as well, but slower ammo worked for me.

The "hotter" the ammo the tighter the extraction in my experience. I have some of the Winchester 1435 fps stuff, and I won't even try it in a 17.

ME NEITHER.....

I noticed the same problem when I ran some
Mini-mags thru a kit gun. Higher speed/power(?),
and the cases tried to permenantly bond to the
chamber walls. Lower powered cases came right out.
Had to use a punch on some of the Mini-mags. Rem
bulk was fine in the revolver, although it did poorly
in a semi-auto. The auto just ate up the Mini-mags.

Thanks guys...I didn't know their "game loads" were hot....I always thought it was their low end ammo....i also have some thunderbolts..are they hot too? Guess I'll keep these for my rifles....

Most rimfire has a thin coating of paraffin for lubrication. The hot weather may have melted this away.

my K-22 had this problem with a lot of different brands. I changed over to a bronze cleaning brush and gave each chamber a real scrubbing and that solved the problem on the Winchester PowerPoint's , Federal automatch & Federal bulk. I don't like CCI mini mags because at least the last lot # that I had was really dirty and I won't use it again.

I also have this problem with my 17-2. I have found low velocity target loads help with extraction issues but are not a solution. I take a "boresnake" to the range and run it through each chamber a couple of times when extraction becomes difficult.

I have a 17,18 and 34 and run into this. What works for me, being old fashioned I use Hoppes9 with a .25 brush and clean the chambers real well.

I remove the cylinder from the gun, using a chunk of leather, chuck it in a vise and do a very good job of cleaning. I also do a good job of cleaning out under the extractor. Dry sufficiently, use the compressor and blow it out real good. Do a very light lube under the extractor and I'm good for a few months.
That cures both the problem of the cylinder to turn easy and also hard ejection of the spent brass. As I also have 3 semi auto .22s rifles I tend to use high velocity ammo most times.

Occasionally the chambers in the cylinder are too rough (poorly finished). When the brass expands, when fired,! it will flow into the irregularities of the chamber walls. I suppose hotter ammo would expand more than lower pressure stuff.

My gunsmith has fixed that easily by polishing the chamber walls. He puts a very fine polishing compound on a shell casing, puts it in the chuck of his drill press and slowly rotates the treated shell casing in each chamber.

Sounds easy, but he's been a gunsmith to 40 years and makes lots of things look simple. I wouldn't try it myself.

Polishing each chamber is relatively easy,I have used an old
bronze brush wrapped with 000steel wool with a dab of
polishing compound( like Flitz)I just hook it up to my vari spd
drill and clean them up one at a time.Just keep the polish
off the blue exterior finish. Pete

Sip, I had two out of three of my 48s like that(hard to extract) they were the two newer ones (dash 3).On inspection, I could see the chamber walls unpolished. I used FLITZ on a .22 mop and a drill. After polishing I put some wax in there. Fixed it.

I also had extraction problems on my 2 model 63's.
I had to send both to S&W to fix this and other problems I was experiencing.
I don't know what they did, but extraction is much easier since their visit to S&W.

I've had similar problems. CCI Blazer was very sticky, while CCI SV was better but still sticky after about 50 rounds or so.

I tried 100 rounds of Winchester sub sonic ammo in my K-22 this morning. this is a 42 grain hp at 1,065 fps out of what I assume to be a rifle barrel of some length. this ammo is without a doubt the cleanest burning 22 ammo I have ever shot and no extraction problems at all. it could easily move to the top of the list for favorite ammo for the K-22.

Blazer stuck like glue to me pre-17 and 18-4. I went back to Federal bulk with no problems.
