I stopped at the local Cabelas last week and saw a few nice Smith and Wessons revolvers. A nice 17-5 going for $579, what appears to be an excellent 5" pre war .38 with lanyard ring that had the 4 side plate screws going for $799 - I looked up the serial number on my phone and it showed prior to 1941 build date. Maybe a 4th change model? I'm tempted to go back and haggle as it was in great shape but a little too much money for me at the moment.
As I was leaving I saw a blue challenged 4" k frame with Pachmayr marked $379. At first I thought it was 15 then as I took a closer look at the tag it said 18-2 and in .22!!!
It had a lot of freckling but no rust. They took off the grips for me and it had a few rust marks but no pitting. Serial number puts it at 1965.
They have the stupid red trigger locks so I asked one of the sales reps to take it in the back and check end shake and if there was any push off. It was fine. With tax and permit fees it came to $420 out the door!
Got it home and almost all of the freckles came off with some oil and brass brush work! The grip area did have one rust spot that came off with some elbow grease. It must have had some holster time as the muzzle and frame and barrel all had some bluing loss.
I'm on the hunt now for some Herrett grips to match my bluing challenged 19-3. This will be a great understudy and cheap to shoot. Picture attached.
