This is the pic the seller gave me. I haven't seen the gun yet but seller insists it's a model 18? I'll try to get the serial number. I wonder if it's been rebarreled to take it out of the prohibited status here in Canada. Curious

and I'm afraid I don't know much about that model. Years ago I stupidly sold a model 18 with the 3TT's and a 4" barrel and I've regretted it ever since. This 18 I'm purchasing has a 6" barrel and a set of rubber grips. I'd like to put a set of wood grips on it - which leads to my question. Is the frame considered a K frame or a J frame or what? Can original wood grips be found or do I have to go to a custom target grip (if I knew the type of frame) and whether it had a round or flat butt. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the forum.
The M18 is a K frame and it should be a square butt. I don't think they made them in round butt. If they did someone here will correct me.
If you watch the forum classifieds you can get some grips for the gun. K frame grips are sold there often, magnas and targets.
Are you sure it is a M18 and not a M17? M17s usually had the 6" barrels.

Any K frame square butt grip will fit and their are tons to choose from any where from $5 to $200.

If it has a 6" barrel it is a Model 17 or pre 17 as Model 18's only came in 4" barrel lengths.

Not to confuse the issue but some Model 17's did come in a 4" barrel length but thats not pertinent.

another question - if I sent the serial number to S&W would they tell me what configuration the gun was in (4' or 6") when it left the factory? thx

Customer service will usually give you a ship date, but a factory letter will give you all the specifics like barrel length and finish.

Looking at the front sight and barrel length it will either be a 17 or a rebarrelled 18. Either way it would make for a great shooter for you.
