Me too! My 18-3 is a 5K26XXX that I thought dated to 1973. I guess having that digit prior to the "K" makes the difference.

I think a serial number beginning K9 (and with five more numerical digits) is a little likelier to be a 1970 or even 1971 shipper, since S&W were so casual about the order in which completed guns were taken from inventory for distribution.

A serial number beginning 8K probably shipped in the mid 1970s, possibly as late as 1977. 1975-76 is a good bet.
