I found a model 34-1 in 95% for $500 and was curious of the value vs a model 18. I recently bought a model 18-4 in excellent shape for $425. I was curious of the production years of the 34-1 and if it is as sought after like the model 18? Which one is more valuable and why? I know the 18 is a K frame and the 34 is a J frame. Thanks for the feedback.

I recently bought a Md 34-1 with 2.5 inch barrel in blue finish for $400. I felt that is was a decent deal due to the length of the barrel, overall excellent condition and original diamond magna stocks. If you post some pics and most of your serial number on the Md 34 I'm sure you will good some good opinions posted here very soon.

Sir,

The 34-1 was first produced in 1960, according to the SCSW(Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson). With an engineering change in 1988 it became the 34-2. The model was discontinued in 1991.

I believe that the M18 is generally considered more valuable than the M34. The evidence for this is that there are far fewer for sale than there are 34s(at least the last time I looked). Also, if you follow the forum discussions here, you'll find almost no one who regards their 18 with anything less than glowing accolades.

My 18, for instance, is the only one of my Smiths that has absolutely no noticeable flaws. Everything about it demonstrates excellence. I've no intention of ever selliing it.

My guess is that the person who sold you your 18 at such a low price hasn't kept up with the going rate for them. That or he is just a very generous person.

Regards,
Andy

Four inch 18s are considered by many the best "all purpose" .22lr revolver.

34s are "kit guns" light and easy to carry....there in case you need it!

Six inch 17s are the best range, target and small game hunting .22 revolvers.

The mod 34 is a blued gun and discontinued, but the mod 63 (same gun but in stainless) is still made. The 36/63 being smaller is a great training gun for women and youth's with smaller hands. It is equally accurate as the mod 18. The mod 18 is larger and heavier, but a fine size for adults. It is a matter of personal preference which one fits your use b est. Value wise, you are lucky to find any 34/63 for less than $500, and a mod 18 for less than $600.

I picked up the model 18-4 from a kid selling his grandfathers collection. I was pleasantly surprised that it is 97% plus condition and to grab it for $425. Thanks for the information on the model 34. I think I will just enjoy the model 18 and put the $500 towards a model 25-2 or model 57. Here is the thread with pictures of my model 18. It is a great shooter and already been to the range 3 times in one month. Thanks for the knowledge and information.

Wesson.........don't know the details of your purchase .. but a story FYI

Several years ago .... I bought a "revolver" from a local gun shop..... it was sold to the LGS by a young man selling 3 of granddad's guns ...... turns out the Grandfather was still alive and didn't know the grandson had taken the gun until about 2 weeks later.........

Yes the gun was stolen.. for drug money..... the police checked out the LGSs........I ended up returning the gun and getting my money back from the shop.

Just an FYI.

That is a tough break. I have a friend who knows the family and I know his grandfather is deceased. I would return that thing pretty quick as well.

Both great guns and both should be keepers IMHO. As to which one is "better" would really depend on your own personal preferences and which one you shoot better.

I use my M18's down at the Range and my M63 (stainless version of yours) for plinking Squirrels in the woods while out Pheasant hunting. No fun in blasting them with a 12 gauge! I would never sell either one.
