I just purchased a model 19-5 and it appears to have little or no cylinder gap. When the cylinder is closed it is tight against the forcing cone. I can push it back towards the rear slightly by hand to achieve a .006 cylinder gap (when I let go it presses back against the forcing cone. Is this back and forward play normal? If not, how is this problem corrected? The cylinder does move what appears to be freely during double action trigger pulls, but the cylinder is a bit hard to open. Also I noticed there is a different serial number on the frame and the yoke, are they supposed to match?

Thank you,

Brian

You described a condition called "excessive endshake", caused by normal wear or improper fitting when the gun was new.

The proper corrective action is to refit the crane or install endshake shims inside the cylinder. The refitting of the crane requires gunsmithing tools and ability, while the shims can be done by most anyone. Check Brownells or Midway for the shims.

The number on the yoke may not be the serial number, but a number used to keep the frame & yoke together after being fitted. See if there is a number on the side of the grip frame, under the grips, that match the number on the yoke.
