So I haven't had a chance to look at this in person yet, but I found this locally and I'm wondering what the value of it is. Its being advertised as a Model 23, which to my understanding would be a rare bird if it truly is model marked as a 23. What would be a go buy it right now price?

Beautiful revolver. I’ve never even seen one in person.

Well, definitely either a 4- or 3-screw frame, so it 'could' be model stamped. I think it would be a bargain in the low four figures but no data to back that up.

Well, pretty clear what your next task is. Post plenty of pics when you get it home!

I've gotta come up with the $1900 first. That's not really in the budget right now with two small kids and my wife stays at home so we raise our kids instead of a stranger. I am gonna see what I might be able to move to raise the funds and hope it doesn't sell before I can

FWIW, I'd take an advance on a credit card if I had to so that it doesn't get away.
That would give you a little time to raise the dough to pay off the charge on the card.
A NIB M23 would be worth it.

I Don't know what a reasonable value would be on this gun, it's just that uncommon. Whatever you do ask them to hold it, Don't even try to bargain or negotiate. But Do maintain your composure and find a way to raise that $1900. The gun looks good, bright blue finish - doesn't look refinished, Red ramp front sight, not the common satin blue like a model 28, a 3 maybe 4 screw frame. A true model marked 23 is a gem of a find a real keeper but if you choose to flip it at a tidy profit I would understand.
When I was a young collector & in your financial position I never had an opportunity like this. It's exciting to watch this unfold. Best of Luck to you.

SCSW 5th Edition just came out. Talking about the Model 23 it says; exact quantity unknown, but possibly between 50 and 100 were model-marked from 1957 to 1963.
Too rare to estimate value. Sale reported at over $10,000.
That sounds right, think I only have two or three of them in the safe.

Asking price is $1900. I just got off the phone, gun was a family heirloom, sounds like it's had one box of shells shot through it. It is model marked as a 23.

I don’t advocate going into debt for a hobby but that is a fantastic price. If you don’t like it it seems you could easily double (triple) your outlay with a re-sale also. Tough decision.

Is it a good buy? Maybe. Is it good enough to empty your savings and take food away from the kids? NO! It is just a revolver, an object.

My counsel would be to make your choice and then do not dwell on it.

See if your dealer will do a layaway. I bought a lot of guns on layaway terms over the years.
It's well worth the asking price. If you pass, let one of us know. Good luck.

Decide why you want it.

Are you going to flip it inside of 5 years. Borrow the money.

Are you looking for a heavy frame shooter? Go with a 28.

Will this be a centerpiece of a lifetime collection? How will you mesh this with raising kids, the greater importance? You and your wife decide together on that one.

I applaud your priorities. We lived the same way. I had enough basic guns, had plenty of fun, but not excessive. Only in the last 10 yrs or so have I really began to treat myself. We raised two fantastic kids, that's where the financial priorities were. If I did it all over again I wouldn't do a thing differently.

The fact that they are now fantastic successful adults means we can enjoy ourselves now. Believe me it is worth it.

"Don't let a nickle hold you back from a dollar". Ever heard that before? That $1,900 can become $10,000. But ...

Now the young family thing, I was there 50+ years ago. You can not afford that handgun. And nothing is wrong with Public School and in the 21st Century women need to go to work. JMHO BTDT
