Model 27-2 5" Show Us Your Gun-UPDATE

...I own three 5" barreled 27-2s, two of which are pristine, in the presentation case and in the same SN range as Bill's 5"er. I have no photos of them yet, but I committed to Bill that I will try and take and post a few during the next week or so.

Finally got the camera out and making good on my commitment to Bill. Here are the two - pretty close to matching 5"ers.

N361983 - shipped in August 1976:

...and N361912, also shipped in August 1976:

I bought them as a set, and my guess is that they were purchased by the original owner as a set...

The Mississippi Highway Patrol started out with 5" registered magnums when they were organized in 1937. 50 of them were shipped to Camp Shelby Mississippi near Hattiesburg to their first training class. David Carroll had one of these a while back and by the time a friend of mine found out about it it had already been sold. He had seriously been looking for a MHP registered magnum. MHP went from RM's to pre 27"s then 27's, all blued and in 5" until the mid 80's when the bottom feeders came along. Almost 50 years. A few of the Mississippi troopers had nickeled revolvers but they weren't shipped that way. I've had a few of the 5" 27's in my lifetime and if I ever get another it ain't getting away this time.

Here is my 27-2 5" made in 1978. It came with the 3T's option in the Presentation Case. I had a smooth combat trigger installed when I had a gunsmith smooth the action. Stocks are smooth rosewood from Sile that I picked up a couple of decades ago at a $10 sale from CDNN. From what I have observed, the Patridge front sight is somewhat uncommon.
Your gun has the right trigger and sights IMO
Look at my truck gun , went to a lot of trouble
To make one like yours.

May I play with you ??? ;)

It's not perfect, nor in pristine condition, but it has exactly the configuration I wanted : pinned & recessed, with a 5" barrel and Target trigger/hammer/grips, and a ramped front sight .

An idea of its date of birth, SN #N4231XX ?

I'll have to add photos of mine, but 34931 checking in here, came back somewhat recently from the mothership after a reblue plus master action package. I'll try to get some photos this afternoon.

The 5" Model 27 has always been my favorite .357. I have had two of them. Here is a pic of my current 27-2 that I purchased new around 1978 from a LE distributor.

Here's some of mine when I first got it. Was wearing modern stocks that I didn't care for (not pictured) & the finish isn't great (not horrible either).

Photos below show some not numbered to the gun stocks & some Kurac's that are beautiful.

I still need to take some photos of it post reblue from S&W.

I've got a couple five inchers, a sweet 1979 example that HughWW turned me onto at the 2019 PHX Crossroads show and this recent arrival from Texas, a 1972 example with magnas and T-grip. IMO the 5" N frame .357 Magnum/Model 27 is the quintessential Smith & Wesson revolver alongside the venerable .44 Special and Magnum models. The Models 19/66 and 586/686 .357's are runners up in the K and L frame categories.
