I got a call from the local gun shop informing me that they just took in a 27-2 with the 8 3/8' barrel and it is nickel. No box or papers. I stopped by on the way home. Beautiful spotless revolver. Looks to me to be unfired. I think it is in the N400,000 serial number range. It has Magna style grips on it. Is this how they were sold or did they all have target grips? I couldn't get a picture at the time. Also it was priced at 1200.00 OBO.
If these are the original grips is that a reasonable price?
Thank you all in advance.

A 27-2 with a serial number in that range would have shipped with target stocks made of Goncalo alves, TH, TT, and a presentation case (standard as of September 1975).

Thank you very much Doc44. That's a few hundred dollar difference without the correct grips I would guess. Gives me a little wiggle room with the OBO aspect.

Don't know if this will help or just confuse the pricing issue. The last year or so I've seen 27-2s as you describe in that $1200 price range even without the box/papers/etc. Lately though I've seen some sell for considerably less which has made me wonder if prices on P&R S&Ws may be getting a little soft. A six inch nickel didn't sell on GB last weekend with an opening bid of $995 but another much like it, also without box/etc., sold for $1900ish. I bought this one last week, as you see it, for $811 OTD from one of the bigger retail sporting goods stores. I still think most S&W P&R N frames are worth $1k or so but I'm wondering if prices are getting a little softer.

As an aside, earlier 27-2s, even 8 3/8 could come with magnas. I bought one in the N195000 range back in 1974 with magnas in the blue box.

Thanks 22hipower. I'm going to have to pass on this one. I already have a blued 1973 6" 27-2 on hold with the same dealer that I paid $800 for.

I don't see N frames getting soft at all in terms of price. The 357, 41, and 44 mag's are going thru the roof just since last year. Now I am only talking like new in presentation case with tools and paper work. Not gun only pawn shop specials in average condition.

So what would this gun be worth w/o the extras but in like new condition but with the wrong stocks?

I agree that auction values have trended downward over the past 6 months or so. That said, a nice set of period N frame Target stocks would be in the $150-200 range and you 'might' get that much of a price break with haggling, but maybe not.
