Model 27 Classic

Thinking about buying one but haven't quite "pulled the trigger" on that decision. For those of you who have one, how do you like it? 19 Classic is a possibility as well, but I am leaning more toward the 27. It will strictly be a range toy.

Many prefer the older pre-lock guns. I do but..

Warranty has run out on most all of those models.

Buy new and you will have warranty support for life.
 
The one I have here displays clearly what S&W has done to cheapen manufacture of the 27, but it does shoot well.

Look at an older 27-2 and compare it to the "classic" model. Once you do, I'm betting you'll prefer the former. As far as the warranty goes, I wouldn't be concerned. The old ones rarely break. Good luck.

Do prefer the 27-2. :)

But- the new one does shoot, if that's all you care about.

I own a 27 Classic 6.5" and love it. I also have a Model 29 4" from 1982. IMHO, I like them both for shooting. Both have very nice triggers, feel good in my hand, and shoot well.

I was looking for a nice used 27 before I bought the classic. However in my area the 27's were all over $1000 and were in so-so shape.

I looked at a Classic a few years ago at a LGS and it was decent. But, I started off with pistol owning with a 27-2 and I could tell a big difference to me at least, in build quality and looks. To me, the new "Classic" just doesn't look right with that lock hole on the side, as the true Classics don't have that. And I am not coming down on it about the lock as I have a couple of new guns with the lock and they work just fine and with triggers that feel as good as my older guns. But to me, if S&W is going to label the gun a "Classic", then it should be built like the guns of yesteryear with forged internals, firing pin on the hammer, the traditional stippling on the barrel rib and no lock on the side. And price it accordingly, so S&W doesn't lose out too. If they did that, I wouldn't mind paying $1500 for a guns such as I describe. But as far as the guns go, I imagine they will shoot good and hold up well. Another thing the new guns lack is nickel plated offerings, if nickel is your thing like it is for me.

BTW, I own 7 model 27's and the newest I own is a 27-5, made around 1990 or 1991 and still has forged internals. Most of them have been bought in the last 6 years as I decided to collect me some model 27's in the common barrel lengths.
 
Part of my reasoning is parts replacement. I have a 29-2 which has bad timing on one charge hole. Guess what? S&W no longer can replace 29-2 hands. You would think they should be interchangeable, but they aren't. Time marches on, folks. That's just reality. I would love an older 27, but I couldn't shoot it because the parts to fix it just aren't there. My 29-2 is now a non-shooter. So for those of you who **** on the Classics, please keep these things in mind. Jesus.

You can find a replacement hand for that Smith, just put some time into it.

Are you sure you cannot find an hand for a Smith revolver? Some months ago a friend of mine bought a hand from Brownells here in Italy and solved all issues about timing of his M29-2: I think it is impossible that an American gun's part is sold in Europe , but not in USA!

If your 29-2 fails to time up on only one cylinder, its more likely the ratchet on the extractor that's bad, you can find those. In fact, you can find a hand if that's what you actually need, right here on Smith and Wesson forum, just ask, somebody knows somebody who has a supply of N frame parts..

If you were to buy a used ratchet, it could even time up fairly well right off the bench, no guarantee, but there are lots and lots of Smith and Wesson parts out there....

No offense Bub, but I don't think Jesus carried a Smith and Wesson, he was more of a "blade man"....


You asked a question, folks have strong feelings about the new Smith Revolver's with the "hidey hole" and MIM internals, however if you wish to purchase one? I'm sure you understand all these issues, no doubt you will be happy with it, and have a full factory warranty since that is obviously a strong selling point for you.

Have you compared the engagement star on the rear of the cylinder? One tooth on that one cylinder could be worn. See what's burred or rolled over, take a flat punch and gently move the metal back.

I moved the metal on a h&r 22 pistol on the lock slots. I made a bad purchase, I left my glasses home. I've learned to inspect closer now.

I lube the rear of my cylinders where the hand engages the star on the rear of the cylinder. Lube =no wear.
 
Now as far as buying my list is very small.

S&W m29-10 6 1/2" 44 mg nickel
S&W m57 8 3/8" 41 mg nickel
S&W m25 6 1/2" 45 lc nickel
 
I have plenty of old guns that Springfield is no longer willing to even modestly support, I guess. I'm thinking mainly of my Model 19s, bit I didn't know they couldn't even supply a hand for a 29-2! What a crock! :o

I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to buy a 27 Classic. I don't own one but I've looked at three or four. They look fine to me. The only thing that keeps me from owning one, or more, is money! :D

I'll buy one some day. I get more reluctant every day to buy older S&Ws. The company's disregard for existing customers/product is annoying, and I don't need any more anyway.

Secondary thought for the fellow with the 29-2... I believe Power Custom may have new-production hands for older Smiths. Anyone needing one could give them a call. If my memory has failed me on this, I apologize in advance.

If he doesn't want to make the effort, I don't mind a good deal on that gun.
