Out of the blue a distant friend called and asked if I was interested in purchasing a Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman from him. All I've seen is 3 pictures he sent me. In blue paper box, 4" barrel, faint cylinder line, very good condition from what I could tell. Serial no. S302XXX

I owned a 6" Model 28-2 over 40 years that I traded and have regretted ever since. So I believe I'm going to jump on this one. We haven't spoke price as of yet. I'm guessing being in Midwest small town pricing would be accurate. I've seen them from $600 to around $1k for a like NIB. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thx!

From what I've seen 8 to 1200 is the ball park. Friend price should be toward the lower end, which is still fair to both parties.

Pics would be good of course, condition is everything! Fun to find that late an S serial number.

Appreciate the feedback. Later S serial no. is what, late 60's? Curious. Here are a couple pictures that were forwarded to me. Wish I had more at this time. Again, thank you.

Probably '68 time frame. This is about the same time the diamond was deleted from the magna grips, so to me everything looks right on the gun.

That one would be a good score!

I was wondering if the stocks should have been diamond magnas, but this one was probably manufactured right after S&W made the change to non-diamond stocks. I'm not sure that those white flecks are freckling, it may just be lint or dust and needs to be wiped clean. The condition of the box, stocks, and the revolver itself, is very nice. I would say at least $1k for this set (maybe $900 to a friend!).

Fairly new S&W enthusiast here…

One of my new S&W’s is a 6” 28-2, without the “magma diamond”. It seems there could be a thread itself on the different grips. Is there a list or webpage anywhere that has this information I can read and save? Are they grips or stocks, or does it matter?

Btw…I sure like my 28-2!

If you look at the top of the page for the various different age groups you will see a notable thread index.

Grips are among them
In the meantime
Some eye candy

I went in a S. Mississippi shop two years ago and noticed a 28 up on a shelf behind the counter. I asked to see it and the owner handed it to me to look at. He told me he had it on GB starting at $600.00 and that if I wanted it I could bid on it there. Jr. was with me and noticed they screwed up the listing and that probably no one would see it. He told the shop owner he just bid on it. No one else bid on it and I went back and picked it up for $600.00 a few days later. It is a 28-0 four screw "S" serial number with diamond insert magnas. Someone had added a white front sight insert and a smooth .400" trigger and an action job. It is butter smooth and one of the best revolver shooters I have. I have a friend and fellow forum member who lives near Baton Rouge who comes over occasionally to shoot with me at a little pistol range I have behind my house. He brought over a 28-2 with the exact features I have in my 28-0. We shot each others guns and the results were very similar. I'm wondering who did this work on those two guns. Did Smith do this, was it something regional, or what?

OP, revolver prices are a bit depressed right now.
$950 if you live in a free state and that revolver is available periodically.
If you live in a gun hating state and that revolver is not seen in
the wild often, then top dollar as appropriate.

What makes the 28-2 so special? I see that GunBroker has a search category for model 28's, and a separate one for 28-2's.

Not much really. Pre-models are desirable. No dash models are unusual. -1s are unicorns, only one documented here on this forum. -3s were short lived, and were the last of them. The majority of the Highway Patrolman's you see are -2s. Of course, any HP is a special gun. It was purpose built for law enforcement, and is just as high a quality as the 27. Finish isn't as fancy, but the performance is!
