FWIW... I have one M28 HP in the safe right now, a 6" with red ramp front but no white outline rear. Haven't lettered it, but it certainly looks like it could be factory. I'm attaching a photo I took about 20 years ago showing the gun alongside a 4" I had at the time, without the red ramp.

When my son completed his second USMC deployment to the sandbox, I gave him his choice of the two guns and he chose the 4". Kinda wishing now I'd just given him the 6", but at least I know it's in good hands.

I have a 28-2 4"barrel that has been converted to 44 special and nickel finish, it has the red ramp front sight and white outline rear. I don't know if the sights are the way it left the factory or not. Years later a friend was looking at my pistol and noticed WSP scribed very lightly on the butt, I never noticed it before. I carry this pistol every day on our walks and hikes with the dogs.

Red Ramps

The four and six inch pictured are -2s from the early 80's. Both RR and WO. I know for a fact the six inch was shipped that way, as it is a WSP commemorative. The four inch looks exactly the same, indicating to me that it also was shipped that way. Neither are lettered.

Very interesting! I have two minty 6" Model 28-2s and both have the standard ramp front sight (no red insert) and no WO on the rear sight. I also have a first year 4" Highway Patrolman and two 4" Model 28-2s, and none have the red insert or WO rear sight. Kind of coincidental that three different 6" Model 28-2s in three different shops had the red insert.

Back when I was a cop some of us bought the 27 that came with RR/WO and others the plain jane 28. Eventually some with the 28 will take it to a gunsmith and get the RR, it was common work.

I bought this 6-inch 28-2 made in 1973 around 1992. It has a red insert front sight and a white outline rear. No box, but appears to factory to me.
