I have the chance to buy a model 28 Highway Patrolman 357 in really nice shape for $350 with 300 rounds of ammo. I am thinkin' I should probably jump on it....what do you guys think??? Deal or no deal?? Bluing is like 98% wood has no marks, passes the usual revolver checks and test. What is it about the Highway Patrolman that so many people like??? Is there somethng I am missing??? Educate me please. Thanks in advance for any info.

Jump all over that deal! They are excellent revolvers that will eat .357 rounds all day long and keep on ticking! It will make an excellent heavy duty field revolver.

300 rounds of ammo makes it a crappy deal - I'd pass.

Run, don`t walk, better yet-DRIVE-DRIVE NOW. That is a SCREAMING DEAL. If you don`t like it,I will buy it from you at the price you paid-$350.-- and I already own 2 Mod 28-2`s.

They used to dwell in the long shadow of the elegant Model 27 which was S&W's top-of-the-line .357 Magnum at the time. The no-nonsense M28 was essentially the same gun, with fewer options and a plain-jane finish. As prices for the M27 spiral out of sight, many shooters & collectors have taken a fresh look at the utilitarian workhorse M28, especially P&R versions.

Some of us are beginning to consider the M28's "drawbacks" to actually be strengths. Only two barrel lengths? If you want a 4" or 6", what's the difference that there were no other choices? Polish/finish not equal to the M27? Good! I don't have to worry about holster wear, carrying it afield in iffy weather, etc.

An N-Frame .357 Magnum with adjustable sights, made by arguably America's best revolver manufacturer... yeah, who would want one of those? :D

I got my last 28-2 6" for $400 OTD and I was very happy with that price, for $350 I would buy another one right now if I saw it.

I would pay $350 for a holster worn ex-PD gun without ANY problems, let alone a nice condition one:D

$350.00 - $150.00 free ammo = A Model 28-2 for $200.00, This is a no brainer.I call shotgun for the ride over to pick it up!

Thanks fellas... You convinced me. I will pick it up this Saturday. I already have a 686+ 6" so I kinda thought I didnt need this one but it sounds like it's either jump now or get an *** whuppin' for bein' stoopid if you guys ever I.D. me. Put in a call to the current owner to see what the serial number is and which version or "dash" it has.

If you get it, you will look back one day and say "I was handed a winning lottery ticket!". If you don't get it, you will look back and say "I had a winning lottery ticket and gave it away!". Take your pick.

Well I finally got over to get this thing today. Well worth the 2 hour drive in the rain. I would say the bluing is 98%...has one little shiny spot up at the muzzle. Other than that the only drawback is that the original grips are gone and it has a Pachmayr Presentation grips. N5211XX Serial number dates to 1979. What exactly does the term P&R mean??? Pinned and recessed is my guess. Any one out there have any ideas what this jewel would have cost new in 79??? Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes, you are right about what P&R means. Look in the FAQs for pictures etc. if you want more information.

My 1980 Gun Digest has the following:
Smith & Wesson Highway Patrolman Model 28
Price: S&W Satin Blue ........ $190.50
Price: With target stocks .... $205.50

So target stocks would set you back $15 bucks.

(Just FYI, remember this is 1980s dollars. Per an on-line inflation calculator:
"What cost $205.50 in 1980 would cost $528.13 in 2009."
Still would be a darn nice deal.)

Wow...thanks for the info fellas. Actually there ended up being 500 rounds, he had 400 Remington brand 357mag and 100 Winchester white box 38special, a pistol rug and a leather holster. Yep, I would pay $528.13 for this gun brand new in the box today.

They are habit forming, I bought my first one at Wheelus Field, Lybia in 1962 for $70.00 and I still have it, along with 6 more 4",5 screw and one 6" 5 screw. FYI, I was an Airman second class making $98.00 a month.
