I'm reading a book by an author who shall remain nameless. This author usually is very precise with gun facts however, in this book he mentions one of the characters, a Secret Service agent, carrying a S&W model 29 in 357 magnum.

Did Smith ever make such a beast?

Little inaccuracies like this drive me nuts. I'm hoping the answer is 'Yes'.

I expect he meant a Model 27.

I thought it was model 19's they use to carry?

The book is set in 2005. A city cop sees the revolver and asks "Is that what you guys carry?" to which the Secret Service guy replies "It's what I carry" with an emphasis on "I".

Trivial Pursuit also had the Model 29 mis-designated as a "Colt" manufactured handgun, until me and prolly a few dozen other gun owners wrote them and advised a correction.

This was back in the early 80's, and after being told that I was wrong when describing Dirty Harry's carry gun as a S&W model 29, I wrote the game company the next day.

Probably an uninformed proof-reader missed the mark with that book.

Q) Who invaded Spain in the 8th century?

A) The Moops.

Stuff happens. Bad proofreaders who don't know guns, anyway, etc.

Very few authors really know firearms well. Jack Higgins often coasts by just naming a brand or relying on arms that he knows have been issued by the UK security forces, and the Colt .25 auto, with which he errs on the stopping power with HP bullets.

Donald Hamilton knew what he meant, but few others have. Robert Parker was pretty good in his later books. And Peter O'Donnell scored 100% in his Modesty Blaise stories, as well as being a superior writer with a droll sense of humor, outstanding characters, and a keen sense of place and a good imagination. I'm speaking of his novels, but the comic strip about her (which he wrote, with several artists) was also good, although printed in only one US newspaper, as it was too racy for most. But bound editions of the comics are available. Search, "Modesty Blaise" for many entries.

Even where swords are the weapons, some goof. Bernard Cornwell writes of Vikings and Saxons circa 900AD and never mentions the scramasax all purpose knives. Most of his characters would carry them. I may well write to him about that. But his data otherwise seems authentic. I haven't read his books about Sharpe in the Napoleonic Wars.

He probably also writes for Hollywood, they really get gun stuff messed up!

Probably just a typo. The 8 is right next to the 9 you know.....

or as suggested by another the 1 is right next to the 2. Either way you get a typo!

Oh and I guess the definitive answer is NO, Smith never produced a Model 29 in .357 magnum, not to say they might have mis-marked one or two. We all know that can happen.

I would say that the author thinks that there wouldn't be all that many forum members reading his writing. I saw a movie once, where the gunman was pointing a semi automatic handgun at someone and the slide was locked back. You just have to overlook these type of mistakes to kick back and enjoy the movie/book. It's hard sometimes.

"Major Boothroyd" was appointed "Armorer to James Bond" after the noted British gunwriter Geoffrey Boothroyd wrote to Ian Fleming pointing out the mistakes he made regarding firearms in his stories. British writers tend to use "revolver" as a generic term for handgun, hence the references to someone releasing the "safety on his "revolver."

SOP in the spy biz. When cops ask us something we don't remain silent, we disseminate disinformation. It's the same way we get chicks.
