Model 29 in Early Clamshell Case

Bill, on that early clamshell case, there seems to be an indentation just to the right of the mop. Was there supposed to be an item there? I have a couple of the clamshell cases and they don't have that indent.

Where Smith and Wesson went wrong on those styrofoam inserts was not using blue styrofoam or a blue base paint or glue for the suede tex flocking. The coating easily wore through exposing the white styrofoam. This case of Bill's is in great shape compared to most.

44 Magnums with an 8 3/8-inch barrel were first shipped in late 1958 and cataloged in January 1959. The presentation case used for these revolvers is like the one shown in post #8 by RKmesa. S&W never made a dark blue/black presentation case for a 44 Magnum with an 8 3/8-inch barrel. Mahogany cases with cloth lining were also used for other barrel lengths, but cases for 4 and 6 1/2-inch guns are not seen very often. By April/May 1960 the switch to the clamshell case had been made.

Just as an aside in looking at early cases for the Long 44's, here are some photos of the same case/hardware, but with the cloth lining. Gun included in the photo is a Sept 1959 shipped 8 3/8" 44 Magnum.

Richard, that’s a sweet early 44 Magnum with the scarce satin lining. Not many of those around. 👍

My gun was purchased from a Police Supply in March 1981, a 4 inch with the target hammer and trigger, red ramp sight and big grips, in an identical case. I will check it later today. Regardless of style and variation, the make a good presentation of the 44 mag.

I have two different cases from different eras!

The case on the left is the type of box used from about 1979-1983 and shipped with N frame guns. The case on the right was introduced in 1985. The 1985 case was made in two lengths with the longest case being able to contain the 10 5/8" barrel Silhouette guns.
