Model 29 or 629 -- which would you buy?

Depends, you gonna throw it in the range bag, shoot the snot out of it, and only clean it in months that begin with "j"? Or is this one your gonna drool on, and wipe down with RIG every week? I luv my blue guns, but the stainless guns are the ones that get to go everywhere.

Since I am one that buys a revolver to shoot, and not just sit around looking at it, I would go for the 629. If I was a collector and had no intention of shooting the gun, then the 29 might be the choice.

l prefer blue, but they don't make those now. An occasional blue Classic is all to choose from. lf the blue wears off just send it back to Smith.
They blues it once and they can do it again..

ps... Mark, You and Chris are PATHETIC.... Just typical of a Tin Knocker and lron Head :-)

If I planned to carry it alot or take it hunting, probably the 629. For a range gun or a bragging rights, looking at gun; probably the 29.

I'm not a big fan of the .44 mag. caliber. I just don't shoot it much. However, I am a fan to the Md 29. Here's mine, a Md 29-2 from ca. 1970. If you plan to shoot your 29 or 629 frequently, get the 629. It too is a beautiful gun. Good luck with your decision.

Of the 4 S&W revolvers I have only one is blue and I like it above all the others. To me wood stocks on bright blue is the epitome of the gunmakers' art. Stainless, while easier to clean, reminds me of my cap guns of over 60 years ago. At this point, if given a choice of blue versus stainless I will pick blue everytime,

The Model 29... No Doubt!!!!!!! I had one with the 8-3/8" barrel and I allway's thought it was the Ultimate Pistol!!! The one thing I don't like about my 500 I presently own is that I didn't have the option to buy one Blued.......

Bluing will take a beating and they're only pretty when NOT fired sitting in wooden boxes.

Turn marks on the cylinder. Flame marks between the flutes. Holster marks. Im convinced the only way to keep a nicely blued revolver is to not shoot it.

Well, I agree with Stirling and a couple of other posters above. Get them both. You can always sell one if you find that you don't like it. If you pay a fair price for them, you will always be able to get your money out of them if you decide to sell. You live in a state notorious for its anti-gun laws, take advantage of the opportunity while it is there. I think that you will love them both.

Well, you didn't tell us what sort of Model 29 you are looking at but generally I think Laketime has this one figured out. You're leaning toward the 629 so go ahead and buy it - especially if it is one of the earlier 5-inch 629s. :)

It all depends on what you're doing with it . If you're going to drool over it and not shoot it much, then blue. wood is far more appealing. But if you're going to shoot it, take it out on the woods and carry it around, I'd opt for the stainless.
