Shooter grade. $400 worth it? It has been buffed heavily and renickeled. Serial number on cylinder visible but not grip frame.

It just might shoot fine. That is .44 Russian I presume? Stick with cowboy action or black powder loads. For $400 who could complain if it shoots? Not so sure about that big screw on top of the action. Experts will likely be along to give you a more complete critique. Here's mine. Belonged to Great Uncle Billy 'Little Bill' Standifer who lost his last gunfight (with Winchesters) in Texas in 1903, but not the more than several prior. That's him in my avatar.

It is is mechanically safe and sound, grab it fast. Not collector grade but would be a joy ot shoot some light cowboy / SASS rounds.

I do not think you can go wrong with spending that kind of money on a working Model Russian 3rd. That one has a replaced screw, a missing lanyard ring, and was buffed to within an inch of its life. It will never interest many collectors, but should be fun to shoot at the range.

I no longer use black powder in these revolvers, mainly because I hate dismantling the gun every time I shoot it, due to the black powder residue getting everywhere, even inside the mechanism. I hand load to 600 fps with Clays and cleaning is a breeze. Less recoil, less speed, less cleanup, less pressure, cannot be bad on these 140 year old boat anchors. All I lack it a pair of giant hands so I can cock the gun without changing my grip to do so.

Clumsy, heavy, ugly to many, an ergonomic disaster, stiff action . . . but puts a smile on the face of anyone who shoots them!:D

Does anyone know where I might could find the correct top takedown screw?

Can't go wrong for $400. You can't get a repro that cheap. Even overbuffed its super cool and looks great at a distance. I would have snapped it up too.
