Model 36 disassemble

I've torn apart about 20 K, L or N frames and can do it with some ease (but I'll never quit my day job).

So I bought a beater Mdl 36 wherein some previous owner had chopped off part of the hammer spur in a clumsy attempt, I presume, to bob the hammer. No problem: I found a replacement, almost factory new.

Except....I can't figure out how to remove the coil main spring, without damaging something.

Stupid basic question, I know, but I need some basic help.

Also, once I get it off, would it be stupid to take a coil off to reduce cocking effort?

Cock it, and there will be a small hole in the rod to stick a paperclip in. Release hammer, and coil/rod assembly should pull out easily.

If you want a lighter spring for a J-frame, I recommend buying a Wolff reduced power spring kit. That way if you don't like the weaker spring, you can just put the original back.

Be aware, that you cannot reduce the mainspring weight very much on a J-frame without risking misfires. I have had good success using a Wolff 8 lb spring, but if you make any reduction in mainspring strength, you need to test carefully to be sure that double action ignition is still reliable.
