I hope this is the correct section, I am not sure but looking for some help. I recently seen a S&W Model 36 in.38 special that looks stainless steel. I started looking around and only seen 1 other SS model 36...most being blued or nickel? It is a snub nose 2". Is the 36 a current model production and thats why I am not finding to much on it, or was stainless only made a certain year and rare? Thanks all!!! Also, what would be a fair price on a SS model 36? Thanks agian!!!

***EDIT**** also read that some people got the 36 confussed with a model 60....but the seller insists its a 36

If it is stainless steel, then it is a Model 60.

Thats what I had a feeling. Here is a picture I got from them

It is easy to open the cylinder and look at the inside front of the frame...

I will when I get a chance to see it.....I just find it wierd that it would be marked wrong on paper....like you said...how hard is it to open the cylinder and see?

The picture you posted looks like a blued model 36 to me.

As mentioned model 36's were available in blue or nickel only and the model 60 is the SS version.
There have been some guns pop up that have had a hard chrome finish applied after market that appears like Stainless.
Also some mismarked or non marked guns do pop up on occasion.
Does not add value IMHO.
Used model 36's sell in the $350 to $400 range around my neck of the woods.
Those rubber grips appear original as I have a 649 with same.
if they are including the two pictured holsters adds some $.

That picture does look like it might be blued. With holsters would this still be considered a $350-400 gun? Also, anything particular I should look for as far as serial number etc? I know Im not falling into a rare find like my 6" P&R 629 haha. Thanks all!

That is a blue model 36, maybe. I guess it could be a 37 also. It has the longer trigger guard which likely means that it is a newer production. The barrel is not pinned so it was produced after 1982. Also the thumb latch is a later version and compared to a flat latch to further confirm it' age. It may just be the picture but the cylinder looks to be a different shade of blue then the frame so I don't know if you should be cautious of a refinish. Otherwise, from the picture it looks to be in good shape, at least the left side does. The price is okay but nothing that I would call a deal. If you can get it for $300 then you are getting a very good price.

Anyway, there's my suspicions but others may have better info.

I got some more info from the seller. It was bought new for his wife as her carry gun, never had +p fired through it. I asked if it was stainless but got no response, so waiting to find out. So....I DONT need another gun, but if I can get a "good" deal and enjoy it I might. So $300 or under would be considered a good deal? I am awaiting some pictures of inside the cylinder with model number, ser. etc. Thanks all!!!!

Keep in mind that there are proprietary finishes like armaoloy, chromoloy, and electrolys nickel which are very similar in appearance to stainless steel. Check for the model number stamp inside the space occupied by the crane (yoke). I have seen Model 36's which were plated and looked very much like Model 60's.

Finally found out, it is indeed Blued. Also has the original grips that were taken off when new. So I may still take alook at it if the price is right. Thanks agian all! I appreciate all the help!

I would think $300 or under would be a very good price assuming that the right side of the gun looks as good as the left side. I wouldn't buy into the holsters unless the guy wants to throw them in. But I don't like to be sold on package deals since I would only really be interested in the pistol. I have an early pre-36 which I would love to shoot but it is a safe queen because it just looks so perty. You will enjoy this gun whether you carry it or just hold onto it. Good luck.

Thanks Dan! I apprecaite the info. The holsters would be included in the price. Asking price is $325. Of course I found this gun just before I got my taxes done, and to make a long sad story short, a mix up at work leads to Uncle Sam saying I owe him 4 Figures...of course that might put this on hold....that is unless its a good deal. (I hate to say, that if this isnt a "great" deal, I will continue on my mission of finding a 4" P&R 629 to match my 6"....thanks agian!
