I have a nice 1964, model 36 square butt with a 3" bbl that I like with one exception...I have big hands and some arthritis (older guy) and the trigger on the revolver is thin and "sharp"...Wondering if there is any kind of a "boot" or adapter that would allow me to have a thicker trigger and not so darned sharp...I don't just want to set the gun aside as a s/d gun but shooting it more than a few rounds at a time really hurts my trigger finger...any thoughts appreciated.

My gunsmith removes the ridges on the trigger and smooths the trigger removing the sharp edges on my j frames (I've no interest in the mim triggers, so all mine are pre 1980).

Makes them very comfortable.

Locate a good gunsmith and explain your issues.

It's a simple fix.

You basically have two choices.....

One would be to install a target width trigger and the other would be to smooth out your existing one. Smoothing out the grooves would still not make it any wider, so I think your best bet would be to find a wide target trigger.

Trigger shoes are a bit dangerous IMO and I personally frown upon them. I must have a few dozen that I inherited and would never use so I don't even know why I still have them.

While you're at it you might want a target width hammer to go along with it :)

S&W did make smooth J frame triggers and they can be found through the usual sources. The trigger assemblies trend to sell for $45-50, about what you would pay to have your trigger face smoothed. I suggest a Tyler-T grip adapter to help your large hands feel more comfortable with the small J frame grips, if you want to keep the original grips. If not, get a set of oversized grips, they will help with trigger comfort and control as well, IMO.

Thanks for all the replies...I looked for target trigger on e bay and lo and behold there are several for sale (.400 wide)...the bad news is they want $90 to $100 for them so that isn't going to happen..

I was fooling around and had an idea...I took a roll of that stretchy rubber "bandage" material (the blue stuff) that I keep in my tackle box to put on my fingers to keep away from line cuts...and I wrapped a couple of wraps around my trigger finger...I couldn't shoot it today but it was suprising how it overcame any sharpness and took up some space and it might just work...if it does the best part is no modification on the nice little 36 and the cost is zip. I'm going to the range early next week and I'll see how it works..I got a feeling it might make things enough better that I can get along...

Thanks again

The NOS or as new take-off parts are definitely getting a bit pricy these days. That said, if it's a Revolver you shoot often spend the $$ and be comfortable! No sense in beating yourself up for years to come over $90 bucks, IMHO. After all, your hands don't shrink and Arthritis usually doesn't get better.

What about getting some shrink tubing for electric wiring and slipping a strip on the trigger and shrinking it with a heat gun or hair dryer? You could double the layer if it's not thick enough. Home depot and lowes has it. Usually comes in black to blend in.

Plasti-Dip and heat shrink tubing work well on the hammer spur, to prevent the sharp edges and checkering from abrading your clothing/coats etc. I'm not sure how well these products would hold up on the trigger.

What you are looking for is a Trigger Shoe .
I have installed them on every gun I own with a narrow trigger. I use a file, dremel tool and abrasive paper to shape and smoothe them to my liking. They are held in place with two tiny set screws and can be easily taken off...no permanent modification to gun , no costly fitting of target triggers. Have used them since the 1960's with no problems.

The model 58 in my avatar has one on the trigger.

Sir - Have new J frame target triggers, forged, not MIM. These are bare only. Wide & grooved. Price is $40.00 delivered. You can reach me at: [email protected] Thanks - Judge

I had a S&W wide trigger installed on my M-36. Would not go with a wide hammer on that gun - but that's just me.

I also had a pair of oversize target grips installed which make the gun MUCH easier to handle and shoot.
