I have the opportunity to purchase a S&W Model 37, the airweight version of the 36. It does not have the original grips (replaced with Hogue rubber ones) or the original box/extras. It is supposed to be in like new condition.

The only pictures I have are small and don't show any detail. It seems like the hammer is shorter than standard, but not bobbed. I found other 37's via Google Image search that had the same hammer style, also. It also looks shinier than normal. Here's what I mean about the picture quality and the hammer:

What would a fair price for this revolver? I would be able to see/handle it before handing the money over.

sounds like a 3 to 400 dollar gun,i'd be leaning on the 300 side.Nice grips ( wood ) will set you back 25 to 40 bucks.

By ALL means, handle the gun before purchase. I saw a nice-looking Model 66 at a recent show that had tremendous endshake of the cylinder/crane ***'y. A lot of wear and the price was $650. No sirree.

Price depends on condition, availability, and location. Here in the Vegas valley, it is near impossible to find at new J at under $500. Saw a nice 3" bbl Chief, about 95%, for $550 at another show. Again, too much.

I agree with the previous poster as to price, but it will be difficult to buy the gun at the prices he cites. Haggling is a must. And again, give the gun a thorough exam, or bring someone along to do it if you can't.

I'd agree with the 3-400 range, but would think more toward the hgh end than the low. Maybe even more than 400 if it's really nice. The model 37 arweight Chief is a great little carry gun, and seem to be less common than the model 36 standard Chief.

If the hammer seems shorter it might be a 37-3, it has the frame mounted firing pin. I prefer the 37-2 as it has the wider front sight than the earlier variants. I would not buy an airweight with the dreaded internal lock though.

For what it's worth, I just bought a 37-2 today for $400, PPT. I'd rate it at 90%+ with factory Magna grips and a Fobus holster.
