My local gun shop has had a nice model 38 with diamond grips on the shelf for some time. I would rate it as 90% plus with just a slight turn ring. They are asking $500 for it.

What is a fair price for a model 38 in this shape with no box or papers?

Check to see if the diamond center grips are numbered to the Mod 38.
The diamond grips were discontinued in 1968. But they could have been switched from another gun. I did that with my 1974 Mod 38.

Does it have a flat cylinder latch or not? A flat cylinder latch would put the gun at 1966 or older.

What this Mod 38 is worth would be easier to determine if you had the serial number so we could date it.

From just a basic description I think it's too high. My 1974 was $400 in exc. condition. If this one is pre 1966 or older I'd pay more than $400 because I'm a sucker for flat latch J frames, but $500 is too much unless you can't live without it:)

HTH

I paid $257 for my used 49 a month ago....it was "more used" then the one you describe, but 500 seems high....however, my rule is if I want it, I WILL pay for it.....

The gun does has a flat latch and the grips do match the gun. I have a thing for older guns, when the quality was there.

Good! At least you know the gun is from 1966 or earlier from the flat latch and the grips('68 or earlier for them).
I would pay a little extra for any flat latch J frame, but I'm not strictly a collector. More like an accumulator.

Let us know how you make out.

$350-400 in the condition you describe.
