The hammer falls to a half cock when the slide is released. It will also do this while firing. Not sure if the sear was worked as this was my Father's piece and he has passed on. It has a nice trigger and knowing my Dad, he did work it a bit. What should I replace?

It Needs A Trip to the Gunsmith
The half-cock notch on the hammer is a safety measure to prevent the gun from firing if the full-cock notch fails. Although I am not a gunsmith, I imagine that if the full-cock is failing, it is likely the hammer, the sear, or both. If your dad worked on it, he could have removed too much material and/or changed the angle of the hammer/sear engagement.
