I'm interested in a Model 39 with a boles SS frame. The slide is blue one magazine. Slide showing some wear. The frame looks very good. Any idea what these are worth. The owner said this one does have serial number. He firm on $600.

While a BII frame is interesting and rare, I wouldn't pay a premium over a standard 39 because of it.

Boles model 39

That's what I'm trying to find out. Are they worth more or since the frame isn't factory. Is the value less. What I read there were only 200 made before the ATF shut them down.

I went through this about 5 or so years ago when a NOS frame (only) showed up on Gone Broker. I really wanted to build a two tone and wanted a steel frame. IIRC, the price of the frame went close to $500, so I changed directions and built my FrankenSmith on a 639. It was more cost effective to go that way. To me, today, that gun, omplete and ready to shoot sounds pretty good at $600. But it’s your money and your decision.

I have seen several of them over the years and they were priced much higher. All the others I have seen have a s/n on the frame. Usually a 3 digit number followed by a -ss. I have pics on my computer but I'm not home at this time to post one here.

I don’t think $600 is too much money to spend on a handgun you REALLY want, especially considering the value of a dollar these days.

At the same time, I love the 39 and I have one from the early 60’s and two 39-2’s and there ain’t -NO- way I would spend $600 on that pistol.

I also have a pair of 3906’s and those are cool also.

Not getting much response. So is the consensus $600 a good price or too
much.
As I said, that price would have been attractive to me several years ago. I ended up buying a Model 639 for about $550 (IIRC) back then to get a stainless donor frame to build a Gen 2 version of the gun you’re looking at. Add the cost of a couple of blued uppers and I’ve got waaaay more in mine than $600.
If you’re looking for a collectible, the niche for Boler frames is probably pretty small. If you want a great shooter, it looks like a very attractive buy, at least to me. But as I’ve said before, “Your money, your choice!”

FrankenSTEEN not Frankenstein

goldwinghg, I am wit Green Frog and, for that matter, Sevens.

I'm BIG on collecting Model 39s and I just wouldn't want one, or two Bolles' frames.

While I've not seen the advertisement to which you refer, usually there's some sort of oblique reference about the Bolles being a "prototype" which, I infer, means a connection to Smith & Wesson, itsownself. At other times one need not infer anything, a direct connection with SnW is flat-out stated.

IMNSHO, as a collector piece the Bolles is dead in the water.

As a practicable (look it up) matter it weighs more than the real thing. That'd play big if a .45 ACP but we're talking 9mm, here, and muzzle flip ain't a huge problem with nines.

And while we're on the "real thing" thing: It just ain't. So the heavily researched collector will shy from it (as they have over the years, IMNSHO, as evidenced by a falling price - for it once carried a price tag twice that of the present).

Bottom line? Green Frog has an excellent advice: Should you really want it, go for it (or something like that; I think). But just don't expect to rake in the BIG bucks someday (And, puh-lease remember that had this investor bought all means of el cheapo supremo $0.25 stocks, as did others, I'd buy dat island once owned by duh pimp and his mistress).

And now ...

The previous replies are all informative, on the money and DCW summarizes it all as only he can. I, like him have a vested interest in 39 collecting and have managed to purchase most guns a 39 collector should consider buying. The SS Boles isn't among them as it ain't a real S&W 39. a year ago they would be listed for sale at $2K+ so I guess $600 is a steal for the stainless steel framed gun. I'm still curious about the mention of no S/N. Do you mean a Model 39 serial number? All the Boles were marked as in the picture I included.
