I recently went through over 2 months of customer service hell with S&W after sending back my brand new Model 41. The bluing began coming off on the first cleaning. Long story short, I had to wait a very long time and had to jump through many hoops with S&W management before S&W decided to send me a new gun.

The finish on the new gun looks the same as the original gun. I haven't yet fired or cleaned it, so I don't know if it will be a problem this time.

I've seen a few other posts of S&W bluing having this type of problem. Anyone else had this issue with nay recently purchased S&W gun?

welcome to the Forum....
having been in the refinish business for many years, my first question would have been what did you use to clean the gun?? I say this because it does NOT take much or even the wrong stuff to literally wipe off the blue of ANY gun........
Yes, they took care of your problem and you say
"it looks the same" ( well it should, thats what and how they come out these days....)
use the proper gun cleaning stuff, and use the gun and see what happens to this one, careful as the are LOTS of things out there that can and will "affect" ANY guns finish, up to and including "bodily fluids"....Coke and Pepsi don't bode well either, as well as the common elements in nature ( i.e. water)....this said,we cannot "see" it, ,so cannot make a guess as to what to expect or maybe what happened to the other gun..........
good luck

Hi dant,

I used M-Pro7 to clean the original gun. It was the first time the gun had been cleaned (after the first firing session). The finish immediately started coming off on both the outside and underneath sections of the slide and barrel as soon as the cleaner touched it.

S&W told me that shouldn't have happened, and attempted to re-blu the gun, but apparently it couldn't be done properly, so they replaced it instead.

I have tried applying a bit of the cleaner to a small area of the new gun, and it didn't seem to harm the bluing. I think this one is going to be ok, although I am sure going to be cautious with it from now on and try to use solvent only on the parts that reallly need it.
