Took out my '86 vintage 41 out for the first time in a while and when I cleaned it afterward, I noticed that a chunk had broken off the hammer at the half cock ledge. I couldn't find the missing piece so it may have been like this for years and I just didn't notice it.
What are you thoughts on this?
Replace?
Don't worry?

If you have only just now noticed it, as you say, it could have been like this for a longer time. The hammer strikes only a small plunger behind the firing pin to fire the gun. When you do a standard field strip you should be able to see the part of the hammer that actually strikes that plunger. About 0,5 cm down from the top at the center. Verly likely your gun is fine.

If the piece broken off is that portion which strikes the firing pin plunger, then of course the gun will never fire again.

After all that, your gun is probably fine... :)

If the gun still fires you have NO worries but if it won't then I would send it back to the mothership for repair.

Seeing where the piece came from, it may never cause a problem. However, since it's from part of the firing mechanism, I'd change it out just to have piece of mind.

Most of us figured that Tom. You are quite right tho, many of them do think that way.
