Guys,

New here and have very much enjoyed learning from this valuable resource. I'm on the hunt for my first Model 41 and seek some advise.

I've focused my search on an older model. I like old guns and am after the aesthetic that comes with old guns. The Model 41 has quite a history!

Currently looking online at a late A-prefix, serial A576XXX that does NOT have a cocked indicator. The gun is in nice condition, but what are the chances this piece has the deep finish before the process changed? From what I have gathered, this is circ. 1979 vintage. What was happening in regard to quality, etc. in the era when cocked indicators went away on A-prefix pistols?

The only pistols of this type that I've experienced personally are a brand new Model 41 and a mint (absolutely mint!) Model 46. The 46 from what I've come to understand was a "poor mans" 41, mainly due to the finish process. From what I experienced the finish on that 46 was absolutely outstanding and could not imagine anything more desirable.

This is my point of reference for wanting an older gun. Am I chasing something that makes little difference, or is the finish on the older guns that much better.

Thanks for the replies.

Sweet

Best blue and overall fit etc. 12000 and below range then to the 114999 level followed by the "A" series thru about A475000. After this period, quality problems in and out. Finish continued down with the TAA and later. Just one opinion.

First couple of years of production the 41s had spectacular polish/blue jobs, almost equal to the early High Standard Trophy models of the late '50s/early '60s.

41 finishes went downhill from there, pre-'A' and early 'A' guns still pretty good. Get a cocking indicator gun if possible.

Just picked up a 41 last weekend at the local
Gun Show. It is s/n 46XXX and I figure about 1961. Finish is great but I bought it to shoot. Went through 50 rounds yesterday as fast as I could staying on target. What a kick that is! That is why I bought a 41.

I acquired a Model 41 last weekend with serial A646XXX, someone said it's a 1980 series. I would like to know a bit more details about it if anyone can help. Information about the newer models would be great, as mentioned above, finishes, fittings, ect. I'm guessing mine isn't as good as the older ones but I still like it a lot! Thank

As noted in the 1980 range - no CI and probably in the 2 piece box with foam liner. Finish as you note - not great but a better than later finish. This area had some quality issues, but if running well with good ammo, enjoy.
