Tom Beckwith or one of the other guys will see this soon and can tell us about the reason for the indicator's demise. And too, I am assuming that the indicator came on ALL the 41s up to '78; that may not be true.

Cocking indicator dropped along with the 7 3/8" bbl (to 7" bbl)to cut costs. The 5" sport, 5.5" EFS, and the 41-1, along with the 46 were all dropped earlier. A combination of demand and cost reduction from multiple setups, inventory.

Note that rear sites were varied in attempts to cut costs. The only reversal to product line slimming has been the 5" nonsite bbls and the adding of D&T for scope/dot units.

Basically all aftermarket bbls were modified S&W bbls until Bully Bbls came along.

Thanks for the info Tom. A friend of mime has a 41 with the cocking indicator, and he says it is worth more than one without one. Is this right.

You will get many opinions on that question. As a collector (and sometimes shooter) when the cocking indicator was dropped (A465000 range) shortly later (A550000 range), quality started sliding and has had a series of ups and downs since then. This included basic fitting, finish, and a failure to maintain quality control levels of earlier days. Several pages of details can be found if you "search" this site.
