As the title says I have a Model 57, 6" nickel with wood presentation box (foam in top, molded black plastic in bottom), with the tools. Serial number N728709. Looking for any info from the knowledgeable folks here.

The tools and the box lining aren't original. Without knowing the serial number, we can't guess the production date. Its prior to 1982, when the pinned barrel was eliminated, but impossible to give any other info.

Also added to original post.

Thank you, much appreciated!

It's the gun Harry Callahan should have been issued!

Thanks Bob! Will check it out. I have a few other revolvers, but this is my first .41

Welcome from Virginia! That is a real sweet looking Model 57. I love the N frames, either Nickel or Blue.

Yours appears to be for sure 1980. The tip-off is that (IF that is actually the original wooden case....and it probably is) the gun is pointing to the right when in the case. This orientation was only used a couple of years per the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (our "bible" around here). As already posted above, the tools are not original and there should be a tool box "cover".

Below pics are my 2 1980 N frames and their cases & accessories. The Model 29-2 (44 Magnum) has its original wooden case, tools, and tool box cover, however the blue flocking is long gone, deteriorated to dust. The serial number on the 29-2 is N 798XXX.

The other gun is a Model 27-2 (357 Magnum) in Nickel finish and this gun came with everything, meaning blue box numbered to the gun, original wooden case, out cardboard shipping container, unopened tools in bag, documents. However prior owner had evidently relined the top foam liner, and the bottom blow molded black plastic liner with maroon velvet. It is a very nice job, corners and all well fitting, but not original. Also evidently the tools would have never fit in the box cutout if lined with maroon velvet, so he/she covered right over it and then added another cleaning rod and SAT, just sitting on top. Serial number of the 27-2 is N 733XXX
Note that both guns point to the right.

In any event you have a nice one. I don't have anything in .41 so I'm still on the lookout for one like yours, blue or nickel, then I can add another caliber to "ye ol ammo pile":D

Enjoy that new gun, and give us a range report when you get the opportunity.

@cmansguns

Charlie B,
Since you like N frames, here is my 25-5, blue, 6", .45 Colt, with Hogue Monogrip. SN N844889. I bought it when I became a full time LEO in '85, and carried it with 2 Safariland Comp 2 speedloadersz, and 18 rounds of Winchester 225 grain Silvertip hollow points.

Officers were issued a Model 15, 4", .38 spl, with a double dump pouch for reloading. Most guys tossed the Model 15 in their locker and bought a Long Colt out of pocket.

I carried the 25-5 as a duty weapon and sometimes off duty, for many, many years, and many adventures. I still have the full kit.
