I recently came across this in a friend's estate. It's a Model 58 with a trigger overtravel stop brazed on. It has an amazingly smooth and light action. Has anyone seen this screw in the bottom of the butt before? I didn't have time to take off the grips and see what it does, but assume it's being used as a set screw.

That gun may have a Ron Power action. The screw in the bottom will hold the strain screw in adjustment. Others copied Ron's work and ideas, so it may have been someone else. Ron used to put a short brass rod in before the set screw to not damage the strain screw threads.

Is it possible someone D&T’ed the butt for a lanyard ring and a set screw was installed the plug the hole?

I don't think it would be a plugged lanyard ring hole. M58's didn't come with a lanyard ring and if one were added they usually center them on the bottom strap and it would be larger in diameter. That would mess up the SN on that one. BTW, that gun dates to 1965, the stocks aren't original although they are the correct type (PC magna).

I'm in agreement the screw is to keep the adjusted strain screw tight. IDK about the mentioned modification, but there's also been what looks to be an adjustable trigger stop added. That's a nice looking M58, and should be a great shooter. Do you plan on buying it and what's the price like?

The trigger stop isn't adjustable. It is a solid piece of metal that is brazed on and fitted.

I haven't set a price on it, nor made a decision whether to buy it from the estate or not.

I had assumed it was threaded into the trigger. That's a second-year gun and even with the modifications should be worth $1000- $1100. Not having the diamond PC magna originals is probably more detrimental to the value than the internal mods, and that is easily addressed, although they wouldn't be numbered to the gun like the originals were. Is there a box with it?
