Model 60, adjustable

A buddy of mine had a like new Model 60 with adjustable sights. He said some company ordered them and I think there were only a few hundred made. Anyone heard of this?

There have been several runs of target versions during the life of the model 60. The first was I believe in 1986 then the 60-10 in 1996 and the 60-17 in in 2001. There may be others but these come to mind.

Mine is a 60-4, 3" barrel full lug. Fully adjustable rear and pinned ramp front. SN starts with BRNxxx. Not too common, but I don't think they are rare.

The first Model 60's with adjustable sights were a run of 2 inch round butt .38 Specials made for Ashland Shooters Supply.

SCS&W says that there were 660 of them made in 1986, but I bought mine NIB on July 1, 1985.

I bet that is the gun your friend is talking about.

The 3 inch guns with full lug barrels came along later. SCS&W says 1990 (M-60-4). I got mine NIB Januarly 11, 1991.

My 60-1 2 inch target sighted RB letters to 6-24-96 and one of 666 made for Ashland .

With the 3" barrel, new Mod 60's have adjustable sights.

The new 640 hammerless has night sights in 2 1/2", but they don't look adjustable.

Model 60 with adjustable sights

My wife had a Model 60 [.38 Special only.] with adjustable sights. S&W made only 170+ or - of these guns.
She put the gun UP in it's box. When she got it out for cleaning the rear sight was broken. Our local gunsmith said it was a manufacturer's defect and S&W should fix it free. S&W chrged her $50.00 for a replacement sight. She dumped all her $3,000 collection and bought Rugers.

I bought mine when they first hit the market. I would have preferred a 4" barrel but took the 3" (only length availailable).

After I got it home and stoked it with some good ammo I was amazed at how well it shot (and allowed me to shoot with that shorty barrel).

I have shot MANY scores at 25 yards on the timed fire target that are 95x100 or above.

The only criticism I have is the trigger is grooved with near razor edges on the grooves and the trigger sides. I need to carefully stone them a bit to reduce the blood flow when shooting double action.

This is an excellent choice for self defense OR an excellent field pistol. I have taken a number of cottontails, grouse, and snowshoe rabbits with it:

ISOM, just curious. What was the defect that caused a rear sight to go on the shelf in one piece and come off the shelf broken? Did it fall apart on the closet shelf? Is it possible that someone (nosey little people come to mind) took it down to look at it and dropped it on the rear sight? It just seems wierd that it would break all on its own without anyone touching it.

Stranger things have happened, just seems unlikely.

If I may contribute! The M60-4 is one of my favorite S&W's in the way it feels and looks. I think someone said that it resembles a baby "L" frame!

I do have to admit that I haven't shot mine yet nor has anyone else! I got it last year in May. Box doc's and papers and never fired. A 1993 production.

I think this year will be the year to break it in...

I really like the way mine looks and feels, but I *love* the way it shoots.

My oldest Model 60 which was carried by me as a backup needs a new hammer thanks to my smithing. Who is recommended to find one?

I have one of the '86 run of 2" RB adj. sight M-60s w/box, docs, and unopened cleaning kit. It appears to be unfired. I am considering selling it. What do you guys think would be a fair price?

The three inch guns are hard to find but do pop up. I haven't seen one of the "shark fin" front sight 2" guns in a long time. Here is a 3 incher I stumbled onto.
