Hi,

I have a model 60 with a one piece wood grip.
I want to replace it with a rubber grip.
The grip will not slide off, I am afraid to damage the grip or scratch the frame.
Please give me any pointers or advice that might help.
Thanks

I'm not qualified to answer your question concerning firearms. If it was something else I'd hold the frame in one hand and tap a rubber mallet around the piece to be removed...

when you say "One piece grip..." is it solid and in fact ONE continous piece? or is it slotted (split) down the back or is there a screw hole at the bottom??? this would help to get it "off" for you......any pictures??

If has a screw in the bottom I would do the following:

Unload weapon, remove screw, hold grip in right hand and frame in left and gently try to rock the grip ever so slightly fore and aft while applying light downward pressure. Once the grip loosens up, slowly remove the grip, taking care to catch the grip locating pin should it fall free. On Hogue 1 piece wood grips for j-frames, the original S&W locating pin is replaced with a shorter pin and they are not always interference fit. It may drop out and bounce to the netherlands if you're not expecting it.

OK, here are pics of my handgun.

My pics aren't showing.
The grip has the screw in the side and there is a slot along the back and at the base so the serial number is exposed.

take screw out, then drop it back in the hole and tap the head of the screw with handle of screw driver. it will push off left grip.

It is one piece there is no seam, there are not two halves, it is just one piece.

Thanks, was there a trick to getting it off?
Mine will not budge using hand pressure.

That grip has pins that secure it's alignment with the other side..
Try loosening the screw all but one thread & then press the screw towards the other grip, You might even have to slightly rap the handle of the screwdriver taking care to not slip & scratch anything, This should start the grip on the other side coming off, once removed you can usualy just take a finger or a piece of dowel & knock the other grip loose from the inside of the other grip area..
I have that very same Dymondwood grip that came factory on my 342Ti, See Middle revolver in pic.
Good Luck!! Tell us how it goes & Be Carefull.

A guy on The Firing Line was having the same trouble with a Hogue grip. He tried everything and even called them. Still couldn't get it off. I told him to remove the front sideplate screw and take out the cylinder/crane assembly. This gave him a really good grasp of the frame, so that he could wriggle the grip back and forth with his free hand. He tried it and it worked. He was at the point that he was going to have to cut it off the gun 'til the suggestion. Maybe it'll give you the same results.
