It depends what you want. If you want a strong reliable revolver get the Ruger. If you want an over priced piece of junk with MIM parts and internal lock get the Smith.

You're off to a great start on this forum

I own Rugers and I own S&Ws. Both companies make fine revolvers.

:) I disagree with yogi. I don't believe the M60 is junk, I think it is a very well made gun. I also believe Ruger makes a good gun. But to say S&W makes junk guns is just wrong in my opinion. This is a free forum and every one is entitled to their on opinion. Don

I have M60 no dash and a SP101 that I bought used 6+ years ago. I love them both. But given a choice I would carry the M60 for one reason .... it is lighter. The SP101 is a heavy gun but it is sweet to shoot......it is my wife's car gun.

I would have to give the Ruger SP101 the nod in this case for a couple of reasons... the extra weight soaks up the recoil, and it's still a quality revolver for less price.

When I was shopping for a .32 H&R Magnum belly gun, I looked at both the SP101 and the 431PD. Now I know that it's kind of making an apples to orange comparison since the 431PD is an alloy frame, but the Ruger for me handled and felt better in my hand.

I like to tinker, so I did did some 'fine tuning" by doing a "melt" treatment of the angular edges on the frame top strap and barrel rib, I also took the sharp edges off of hammer spur and trigger, and polished them.

Put in a Wolff mainspring , chamfered the cylinder face and rear chamber holes.

The .32 H&R magnum is not know as a strong recoil cartridge... but I can't imagine a .357 in a lighter J Frame being "fun" to shoot.

People are quick to fault the Ruger on weight... specs says it's about 25 .oz and the M60 Pro at a tad over 23 .oz, that difference is about equal to what a "C" cell battery weights. The key ring with my car and house keys in my pocket right now is heavier than that, so how much of a factor does an additinal 2 .oz make for a CCW?

Don't get me wrong, as a whole I much prefer S&W for my DA revolvers, but in this particular instance I though the SP101 was the better choice.

Neither holds enough rounds for me to be my carry weapon. A glock duty 23 or off-duty 27 fills that need. If you must have a revolver off-duty, been there for 28 years (cop) as NYPD and now S. Florida, maybe a K Frame w/6 shots is more comparible to the 101.
Good Luck on your decision

I like the SP 101, no sights to snag on the clothing. I wish Smith would make a 3 inch again with fixed sights.

My experience with Smiths is limited to a .357 LONG ago and now, several Model 500s. I do have a couple SP101s as well.

I like to shoot what I carry and the SP101 will take full power loads far better than the Model 60. That isn't my assessment but that of a S&W engineer I know. Don

SP101, when i want a "small" framed .357 magnum its not so i can shoot mid powered loads. my .357 mags shoot full powered loads so the Ruger gets the nod for ease of shooting.

if i wanted less than full powered loads id carry a .38spl.

i have two 640-1, one is magna-ported, and i have a 3" sp101.

comparing the non ported guns the sp101 is better, but the ported s&w gets the nod over all.

but that wasnt the option here.

I've owned both an SP101 and an M60 and have shot the pro model. The pro model had a very nice trigger out of the box than the other two did. I don't think one is really better than the other I'd say the more appropriate term is refined. The S&W gun are more refined out of the box than any Ruger, but the ruger gets the nod for strength and ease of shooting.

I'd not hesitate to carry either or depend on either one as both are a fine .357 magnum revolver. The Ruger is much heavier to me than the smith is and the steel J-frame carrys better for me in a belt holster. I loved my Ruger sp101 but I just couldn't find a comfortable way to carry that gun for 9+ hours a day,and I had milt sparks leather belts and a OWB rig for it. I also have a disc in my lower back that is damaged as well as two disc in my neck that need to fused.

This sucks as I'm only 31 years old it was a car accident with a guy with no insurance, however this is what I'm stuck with. I also tried a should rig but my neck ruled that mode of carry out quick, with anything more than my 340PD.

For me the deal breaker was the weight of the Ruger vs. the smith, the smith weighed less even though it was all steel. pick which ever fit you/feels better in your hands, try to shoot both if possible before buying.

I own and like both. The SP101 is great for carry where you feel the need for heavy hitting rounds. The M60 is just fine for street carry. Bullet configuration is of prime importance here. 2" barrels don't give the best performance for most .357 mag. There are some pretty hot .38 Spec. that are almost as effective from a 2" barrel. Buffalo Bore 158 gr. lead hollow point (FBI load) is a good example at 1000 fps from a 2" barrel.

Groo here
I have an SP101 tricked out [2 1/2in] and a Pro [3in] and shot an sp101 3in...
The SP's are a better gun if heaver loads and bullets are used [I set mine up for up to 200gr mag loads ported pollished ect]
The Pro however is a better carrygun as it is smoother /lighted...
and seems to shoot lighter bullets better..
[I shoot only mag or +p+ loads in both ]

I have a 640 which is essentially identical to a 60, and an SP 101. The 2 oz difference in weight doesn't sound like much, but it's a difference I can feel, which is why I carry the 640.

I'd agree with others who have posted that either choice seems solid for the most part, but I think each gun has one distinct advantage. For the SP 101, it's price, by about $200. For the 640/60, it's the fact that you can get a .22 twin for practice which allows you to duplicate the ergonomics (except for weight) while enjoying much cheaper practice rounds and less recoil.

What he said.

I carry a Ruger SP-101 and would not consider something else. It's a great lil' .357 carry gun.

The spurless SP101 is a very nice gun and a better design than the Smith. They are both nice and I have a model 60 which I really like, but the Ruger is just a better design. No side plate, simpler trigger design with easy disassembly and very strong. Out of the box, though, the Ruger must get a trigger job to be useable. I swear, that hammer spring could see duty as a garage door spring, or could replace my truck springs holding up the Cummins! Also, the Ruger grips absorb recoil better than the Smith's and there is no lock to think about. Although, Smith has the name. Hmmmm.

i guess it depends on how, where, and how long you will carry it. i have had a bunch of j frames, and i love them. i carefully studied the sp101, and got a 2 1/4 in spurless 357 and put some really smooth eagle rosewood secret service grips on it. it was a solid, modern, nice-looking unit. but! man, it was heavy! it just proved to be TOO heavy for me to carry while doing anything at all. i just didn't have any use for it, and sold it. i am sure there are folks who are the right size/shape, and don't necessarily need to be able to do strenuous activity while carrying that find it acceptable, but i didn't. i can carry a 37-2 or a 340pd with very little side effect at all. a 60 is between these and a sp101.

i'd say it will just depend on your individual situation. either one is a good, serviceable, small, carry revolver.

here is a pic of the little ruger. i liked the grips a lot, and i really liked the gun as a whole. i just wish, for my use, that it had been a few ounces lighter.

I own both The S&W (.38 spl ) dates from the mid 60s when I was a LEO) .But my "every day" CC ( when I am not packing my 66") is a SP101 2 1/4" ,357 mag. w/CTC grips.

Out of the box, the S&W is great, where as, IMHO, the Ruger needs some work. I had mine "honed & "lighter" springs put in. (caution DO NOT put in too light of springs or = prob.s ) After the "tuning", the SP101 is GREAT.

The SP101 is heavier, but the added wt. IMHO,is an advantage.
